For a better quality of stay, the cars have to stay outside: Geretsrieder Karl-Lederer-Platz becomes a pedestrian zone.

Geretsried – Karl-Lederer-Platz becomes a pedestrian zone.

This was decided by a majority in the Geretsried city council in a special session on Wednesday.

Initially, it is to be set up for two years between Egerlandstrasse, Graslitzer Strasse and Martin-Luther-Weg.

Then an evaluation is planned.

Geretsried: City council declares Karl-Lederer-Platz a pedestrian zone

The city center has been extensively redesigned for a good five years.

Work on the Egerlandstraße is currently ongoing.

They should be completed soon.

Since the refurbished Karl-Lederer-Platz opened, vehicles can drive there at walking speed, i.e. a maximum of around seven kilometers per hour.

Coming from the B11, entry is prohibited.

However, some road users disobeyed the rules.

The desire of many citizens who took part in a workshop in the planning of the "New Center" was "as much traffic calming as possible," City Planning Officer Rainer Goldstein recalled at the meeting.

Pedestrians and cyclists should be given a lot of space and the Karl-Lederer-Platz should offer quality of stay.

GIP supports pedestrian zone at Geretsrieder Karl-Lederer-Platz

The city now wants to achieve this with the pedestrian zone.

The Geretsrieder Initiative Platform (GIP) also spoke out in favor of this, reported business promoter Rebecca Geisler.

The GIP is a kind of advisory board that is supposed to advise the city council on questions of inner-city revitalization.

The inaugural meeting took place on Tuesday.

"All the pros and cons of a pedestrian zone were weighed up, and the overall picture was unanimous," says Geisler.

In a written declaration, the GIP points out the conflicting interests.

"Therefore, from our point of view, such a decision must be based on objective data," emphasizes the GIP.

As reported, the city had interviewed affected traders in advance.

"There were neutral to positive assessments, but also negative ones," said Geisler.

Expert: Road network can withstand change

Tobias Schendzielorz from the Munich traffic planning office Schlothauer & Wauer analyzed how a blocking of Karl-Lederer-Platz for motorized traffic would affect the surrounding streets using a macroscopic traffic model.

According to this, when Karl-Lederer-Platz and Egerlandstrasse were opened, 3,000 vehicles would drive through Karl-Lederer-Platz on weekdays.

If this connection were omitted, there would be 1,000 more vehicles per day north of the Egerlandstraße.

4,300 vehicles were previously on the road there.

"Almost nothing is happening on the Böhmerwaldstraße and the B11," Schendzielorz explained the model.

Here, the traffic expert arrives at a cross-section of 6,800 vehicles per day on the Böhmerwaldstraße, i.e. a car or truck drives every 11.25 seconds. The B11 near Geretsried passes a vehicle every three seconds (23,600 vehicles).

Schendzielorz' conclusion: "A pedestrian zone would be a change that the road network can withstand."

Pedestrian zone decided with four dissenting votes

In addition to objective data, the GIP emphasizes that "all the consequences of such a measure can hardly be estimated".

That is why their recommendation is to review and possibly adjust the establishment and consequences of a pedestrian zone after a certain period of time.

The city council included an evaluation after two years in its decision.

In addition, Mayor Michael Müller promised that short-term improvements should also be possible.

In addition, the GIP suggested a regular dialogue with all stakeholders involved and "measures to increase the acceptance of the existing underground car park".

The panel did not discuss the latter.

Also, no specific date has been given as to when the pedestrian zone is to be set up.

Karin Schmid, Christos Saridis (both CSU), Arthur Wolfseher (SPD) and Edmund Häner (FDP) voted against the realignment of the “Neue Mitte”.

Seven city councilors did not attend the special session (Gerhard Meinl, Robert Meyndt-Schmidt, Dr. Sabine Gus-Mayer, Ann-Kathrin Güner, Beate Paulerberg, Martina Raschke, Dr. Elmar Immertreu).

Beate Paulerberg (Greens) informed our newspaper in advance that she was prevented, but for that.

The parliamentary group spokespersons spoke in advance in our newspaper.

After the decision in principle was made, the city council discussed the details.
