The Ministry of the Environment of El Salvador reported that it maintains permanent surveillance of the Chaparrastique volcano, in the southeast of the country, which has been expelling gases and ash since November 15.

This morning there were two explosions through the central crater.

The volcano, located in the department of San Miguel, about 144 kilometers from San Salvador, is located in the area of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Government experts in volcanology explained that this is why El Salvador is a very active country volcanically.

"There is no need to be alarmed, we are facing a degassing process from the Chaparrastique volcano," said Luis Alonso Amaya, director of Civil Protection, on Thursday in an interview reproduced on Twitter by the Presidency's Press Secretary.

Given the activity registered by the volcano, the authorities reported that they have deployed relief forces to assist families in the area in the event of an eventual eruption.

In addition, the passage has been restricted in a range of three kilometers around the volcano and they have asked the inhabitants of that area to suspend their agricultural, tourist or commercial activities.

Authorities have also equipped 26 shelters in the area to move families in case an evacuation is necessary.
