Two natural gardens were awarded prizes at the autumn meeting of the fruit and horticultural association in Hochstadt.

There were plaques for Georg and Heidi Schmiedt and Christine Grenzebach.

Hochstadt

– The award of two gardens as "certified natural gardens" was the highlight of the autumn meeting of the fruit and horticultural association in Hochstadt on Saturday.

After lunch, the 40 participants first went to visit the organic nursery Spatz.

"Where there is nature in the garden, people feel good," said Ursula Lechner, representative for natural garden certification of the Starnberg district association for horticulture and landscape conservation, which awards the certificate.

Georg and Heidi Schmidt as well as Christine Grenzebach received the plaque for their gardens.

The requirements for the certificate are strict: The garden owners, for example, not only have to refrain from using chemical pesticides and chemical-synthetic fertilizers in the garden, but also from soil containing peat.

In addition, a high level of ecological diversity must be guaranteed.

According to Georg Schmidt, the honorary managing director of the district association, climate change is a major issue for all associations in the district.

"Sustainable gardening is the future," he said.

That was evident during this long and hot summer, which saw winners and losers in the gardens.

In view of the increasing scarcity of water, garden owners would have to rethink whether they like it or not.
