The war is back in the capital - and the consequences are serious.

In Kyiv, doctors and nurses are trying to care for victims of the Russian rocket attacks on Wednesday afternoon - under the most adverse conditions.

Yevhen Lapshyn, Chief Physician:

'At the moment there is no electricity or water in the hospital.

We generate electricity using the diesel generators that have been installed here.«

According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, 80 percent of households in the capital Kyiv, with its three million inhabitants, were temporarily without electricity and water on Wednesday.

SPIEGEL correspondent Christian Esch on Thursday morning from Kyiv:

Christian Esch, DER SPIEGEL:

“The new attacks have caused serious damage in the Ukrainian capital, more damage than the previous waves of attacks.

I live in the city center myself and noticed last night that my electricity went out and then after a short time no more water came out of the taps.

The mobile network went down for a short time, but it actually works stably for me and a loud generator ran in the street all night, supplying a neighboring house with electricity.

And this morning the heaters are cold too.

Everything depends on the electricity.«

Technicians are working flat out to repair the damage.

Ukraine's Energy Ministry said the country's nuclear power plants were shut down and most thermal and hydroelectric power plants were down.

According to Kiev's mayor, the power supply in the capital also depends on the stability of the entire energy system in Ukraine.

Christian Esch, DER SPIEGEL:

“Mayor Klitschko has promised that the electricity and water supply will be restored in the next few hours.

But I see here at a public fountain in the neighborhood how people come here with large canisters to fetch the water themselves, which no longer comes out of the tap.«

On Thursday morning, the electricity and water supply in Kyiv could only be partially restored.

According to the authorities, two thirds of the capital are still without electricity.

The Russian military fired about 70 rockets and drones into Ukraine on Wednesday, according to Ukrainian sources.

The primary goal was again the infrastructure.

Putin is consistently pursuing his goal of making life as difficult as possible for the Ukrainian civilian population in winter.
