Damascus-SANA

The book “Why We Need the Humanities” written by Donald Druckman and translated by Zeina Al-Maalouf shows the importance of the humanities, society’s need for them, and their essential role in many social fields.

The book raises the problem of the interest of the United States of America in applied sciences such as technology, medicine and engineering, and its neglect of the humanities such as psychology, philosophy and history, so that these sciences lose their importance in the eyes of students, researchers and scholars.

The book, reviewed by Dr. Basil Al-Masalmeh, attempts to refocus on the essential role that the humanities play in our lives today, because these sciences are closely related to life, jobs, economic growth, societal value, and the inculcation of moral values.

The book focuses on the role of the humanities in all developments, the recognition of social rights, and the need to pay attention to philosophy and other sciences, according to what was stated in the book’s principles to encourage scholars to think and consider people’s opinions.

The book seeks to support research and studies in political issues, technology, engineering, mathematics and human sciences, and pay attention to what society thinks in all cultures.

The author believes that it is better to diversify the political values of the humanities and stand for everything that benefits man and society, including pluralism in academic specializations, programs and culture, because this serves the interests that lead to development.

The book is one of the publications of the Syrian General Authority for Books, and it is located in volume 279 of the large volume. It is the first work of the translator, Zina Al-Maalouf, who works in the field of visual translation.
