The Rappenglücks leave the castle distillery in Tegernsee as tenants.

A serious accident ruined the family's dreams there.

The innkeeper of the neighboring Bräustüberl takes over.

Tegernsee

– It all started so promisingly.

In June 2019, the Schlossbrennerei, a business of the Tegernseer Brauhaus, opened its doors under the direction of star chef Johann Rappenglück and his wife Ina.

In the same year, the restaurant guide Gault & Millau was full of praise for the new kitchen.

"We got off to a great start," says Ina Rappenglück, looking back.

Locals, who would have initially smiled at you as a Munich gastro couple, could be won as regular guests, and the restaurant even survived the corona lockdowns relatively well thanks to the to-go offer.

"It didn't cost us our heads," emphasizes the 39-year-old.

A serious car accident throws tenants of the castle distillery off track

Rather, it was a stroke of fate that ultimately forced the committed family to give up: In March of this year, Johann Rappenglück had a serious car accident early in the morning.

As a result, the 40-year-old had to be operated on several times and cared for at home.

"That completely threw us off course," admits his wife Ina frankly.

Even today, the healing is far from complete, standing for hours in the kitchen at the stove - that's out of the question at the moment.

Without Johann Rappenglück the heart of the restaurant was missing

In autumn, the decision was therefore made to give up the hopeful plans for the future at Tegernsee, to withdraw from the operation of the castle distillery and instead to put health in the foreground.

Without her husband, Ina Rappenglück makes it clear, the “Motor und Herz” restaurant would have been lacking, and the ship had started to lurch more and more.

"We didn't want to wait for the ship to sink, we wanted to keep our eyes open," says the restaurateur, who seems so combative, adding: "It wasn't a failure, it was force majeure."

Herzogliches Brauhaus offers Bräustüberl landlord Hubert to succeed him

The family received support in their decision from the lessor, the ducal brewery.

Duchess Anna in Bavaria and managing director Christian Wagner came to the castle distillery for a press conference on Thursday to describe how the traditional business between the lake and the parish church should continue.

In doing so, they resorted to an obvious solution in the truest sense of the word.

According to Wagner, the brewery quickly sought talks with the innkeeper Peter Hubert and his wife Caterina, in order to also offer them the lease of the neighboring distillery.

"The quality concept is also very pronounced with Peter Hubert, he has proven that he can revitalize a gastronomy within a very short time," Wagner makes clear.

In addition, thanks to the physical proximity, there would be many synergies, for example in terms of personnel,

Duchess Anna in Bavaria: Successors can “build on a very good starting basis”

With regard to the outgoing tenants, Duchess Anna emphasized that the successors “can build on a very good starting basis”.

The Bräustüberl and the Schlossbrennerei would differ significantly in their offers and could therefore complement each other perfectly.

For example, the restaurant by the lake can accommodate completely different events than the Bräustüberl.

Peter Hubert on the castle distillery: "It is a uniquely beautiful property"

Against this background, the Hubert couple did not hesitate long to make the commitment.

"It's a uniquely beautiful property," enthuses Peter Hubert about his future restaurant.

He is happy to be able to take over a functioning team with the staff there.

However, it will not be a seamless transition: until December 31st, the operation in the castle distillery will continue under the aegis of the Rappenglück family, probably December 30th will be the last day open.

Hubert is aiming for March 1st or April 1st next year for a reopening.

"Until then, we'll think about a precise concept," says the landlord.

The months in between are a rather quiet time for gastronomy anyway.

"We don't have to open up again quickly, quickly," says Hubert.

The Rappenglück family returns to Munich

And what are the plans for the future of the Rappenglück family now?

Her husband and she will first return to Munich with the children, reports Ina Rappenglück.

How things will continue professionally is still uncertain.

"We don't really have any plans yet."
