9 outstanding moments that matchday 1 left us

1. The surprises

Without a doubt, the biggest surprise so far is the comeback victory that Saudi Arabia achieved against Argentina, which is considered one of the great favorites to win this World Cup.

The 2-1 victory against the Argentine team was even described as the biggest statistical surprise in the World Cups by the Nielsen Gracenote company.

The other surprise was the victory that the Japanese team achieved against Germany.

As in Argentina against Saudi Arabia, the Japanese team also achieved their victory through a comeback, after trailing at half time and then scoring twice in the second half of the match.

2. Silent protest

Minutes before the Germany vs.

Japan, the German team came together for the traditional team photo.

But in this case something changed: all the players of the European team covered their mouths with their hands.

They did this in the form of a protest for "freedom of expression" within the framework of FIFA's ban on the use of the "OneLove" ribbon.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo's record

Another World Cup for Cristiano Ronaldo, another goal for Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the Portugal vs.

Ghana, the Portuguese captain and all-time top scorer at the national team level became the first man to score in five FIFA World Cups: Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and now Qatar 2022.

Half time: Brazil 0-0 Serbia

Not much to write home about after the first 45 minutes.

Without a doubt, Brazil have been the more dominant team, but they have failed to create any real opportunities.

Casemiro fired from long range, a shot that was saved by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

For their part, the Serbian defense has so far done a good job of stifling Brazil's considerable attacking talent.

Thursday will be a very proud day for the Milinkovic-Savic family as brothers Sergej and Vanja took to the field for Serbia's World Cup Group G match against Brazil.

Vanja is Serbia's first-choice goalkeeper, while Sergej is the team's star midfielder and a wonderful player who has drawn interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

The duo are one of five pairs of brothers playing in the World Cup in Qatar, with Lucas and Theo Hernández (France), Andre and Jordan Ayew (Ghana), Eden and Thorgan Hazard (Belgium) and Iñaki and Nico Williams are the others.

Interestingly, the Williams brothers are the only siblings not playing on the same team, as Iñaki represents his parents' native Ghana and Nico represents Spain, his country of birth.

Cristiano Ronaldo gives a brief press conference after making history

Despite being man of the match and becoming the first man to score in five World Cups, Cristiano Ronaldo was in no mood to talk after Portugal's 3-2 Group H win over Ghana.

After the Portugal and Ghana coaches spoke to reporters, it was Ronaldo's turn to answer questions.

The superstar was smiling when he walked in, but before many journalists in the room could start recording what he was saying, Ronaldo was gone again.

The 37-year-old gave a very brief answer in Portuguese when asked about his eventful week;

he left Manchester United on Tuesday) and broke a record at Qatar 2022.

One journalist estimated that Ronaldo was in the room for only two minutes before leaving.

He certainly he was speaking for less time than that.

Neymar Jr. "is someone who splits Brazil in half"

Later this year, Neymar Jr. looks to lead Brazil to its first world title in 20 years.

The distinctive yellow jersey of the Brazil national team is a symbol that unites the country through a love of soccer and national pride, but in recent years the adoption of the jersey by right-wing supporters of Brazil's outgoing president , Jair Bolsonaro, who have used it in protests and rallies to show their political loyalty to the 67-year-old politician, has sparked controversy.

Walter Casagrande, a former soccer player for the Brazilian national team and for the São Paulo club Corinthians, remembers the feeling of scoring a goal wearing the yellow jersey in his first game with the “Selecao” in 1985.

“It was something magical,” Casagrande told CNN Sport in 2020, “like an enchanted object that moved me enormously.

“Now I consider that the Brazilian yellow jersey has been hijacked and appropriated by the right, so we cannot wear it,” added Casagrande, whose sentiments are on the left side of the political abyss.

Just days before Brazil's national elections in October, national team star Neymar Jr. appeared in a campaign video endorsing Bolsonaro.

"The best player [of the current generation], a genius, is someone who divides Brazil in half because he has shown himself to be a Bolsonaro supporter and more than half of the country is against Bolsonaro, so it is difficult to be loved [as much as the players from 1982],” Brazilian commentator and journalist Juca Kfouri told CNN Sport.

Brazil's generation of 1982 has often been described as the best team to never win the World Cup.

The heated elections last month came amid a tense and polarized political climate in Brazil, which has been battling high inflation, limited growth and rising poverty.

Bolsonaro's leftist rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, popularly known as "Lula," who will take office as president on January 1, received more than 60 million votes, according to the final tally by the electoral authority, the most in the history of Brazil and breaking his own record from 2006.

Ecuador waits for its scorer, Enner Valencia

By Reuters

Ecuador is awaiting further tests on striker Enner Valencia before deciding if he is fit to start against the Netherlands in this Friday's match between the joint leaders of Group A, coach Gustavo Alfaro said.

The 33-year-old scored both goals in Ecuador's 2-0 win against Qatar and is central to their World Cup aspirations, but he limped off at the end of that game with a knee strain.

"The tests showed that he does not have an injury, but the trauma is very serious. This afternoon we will examine him and decide," Alfaro told reporters on Thursday.

Alfaro said that the pressure was off Ecuador given the higher hierarchy of the Netherlands and its presumed superiority.

"We have everything to gain and nothing to lose," he said, comparing it to matches against heavyweights Brazil and Argentina in South American qualifiers.

Midfielder Jhegson Mendez said Ecuador can take heart from some surprise results so far in the tournament, such as Saudi Arabia's loss to Argentina.

"Sometimes the favorite can lose. Every game is different," he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo, historic: he is the first player to score in five different World Cups

It came after the striker gave an explosive interview to Talk TV in which he said he felt betrayed by the team and launched a scathing attack on manager Erik ten Hag.
