China records highest number of daily covid cases for second day

By CNN China Bureau

China reported its highest number of new local Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, recording more than 32,695 locally transmitted cases for the second day in a row, China's National Health Commission said on Friday.

While the recent number of cases is higher than the official number of cases reported at the start of the pandemic, many cases in Wuhan, where the outbreak began, went unreported.

On Thursday, China's National Health Commission reported 31,444 local cases registered on Wednesday, surpassing the previous peak of 29,317 local cases registered on April 13 during Shanghai's more than two-month lockdown.

While higher than the official number of cases reported early in the pandemic, many cases in Wuhan, where the outbreak began, went unreported.

China's capital Beijing reported its third straight day of more than 1,000 local cases, recording 1,648 local infections on Wednesday and one new covid-related death, the NHC said.

It is the fourth covid-related death reported in Beijing since last weekend.

Earlier this week, schools in several Beijing districts switched to online classes.

Chaoyang District, the hardest-hit district and home to many international companies and embassies, has urged residents to stay at home, with many restaurants, gyms, beauty salons and other facilities closed.

On Thursday, Beijing officials said they are turning a major exhibition center in the city into a makeshift hospital for the quarantine and treatment of Covid patients.

China is the last major economy in the world still applying strict zero-covid measures.

Earlier this month, the Chinese government announced limited easing of its zero-covid policy, discouraging unnecessary mass testing and overzealous classification of "high-risk" restricted areas.

It also removed quarantine requirements for secondary close contacts and reduced the time close contacts and international arrivals must spend in quarantine.

Following the announcement, several Chinese cities canceled mass covid tests, but strict restrictions imposed by local authorities to contain outbreaks remain.

A Hong Kong court found Cardinal Joseph Zen, 90, guilty of contravening the Companies Ordinance when he failed to register a fund set up with other activists to help protesters pay legal and medical bills after their participation in the protests. of 2019.

Five other pro-democracy activists, including Cantonese pop singer Denise Ho, renowned lawyer Margaret Ng, scholar Hui Po-Keung, Cyd Ho and Sze Sze Ching-wee were also found guilty.

All the defendants were fined HKD 4,000 (US$512), except Sze Sze Ching-wee, who was fined HKD 2,500 (US$320).

All had initially been charged under the controversial Chinese-backed National Security Law with collusion with foreign forces, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Those charges were dropped.

The charge under the Companies Ordinance, a centuries-old colonial-era law, carries a fine of up to HK$10,000 ($1,274) but no jail time for first-time offenders.

All the defendants have pleaded not guilty.

The court heard in September that the legal fund raised HK$270 million ($34.4 million) in donations and made more than 100,000 deposits.

In addition to providing financial aid to protesters, the fund was also used to sponsor pro-democracy demonstrations, such as paying for audio equipment.

Cardinal Zen is one of Asia's top Catholic clerics and has been an outspoken critic of the Chinese central government.
