To make socks, cotton is in the overwhelming majority of cases, the fiber of choice.
Polyamide or other artificial materials may be added for added strength or flexibility.
For those who prefer to give preference to “natural”, linen is indicated, but it is more summery.
For winter, we will prefer marvelously fine silk, even cashmere or camel hair.
And of course, quite simply, wool.
