Josef "Bebbo" Birzele dies at the age of 67.

The former head of the Hochland youth settlement wanted to make the world a little better.

– The motto of the founder of the Catholic Scouts, Robert Baden Powell, translates as: “Try to leave the world a bit better than you found it.” For Josef “Bebbo” Birzele, this was his life motto and basic motive action.

He died at the age of 67 after a serious illness.

Head of the youth training center for 28 years

Most of the people in the district knew the native of Augsburg as manager of the youth settlement Hochland.

For 28 years he determined the fate of the institution.

It paved the way for recognition as one of the twelve Bavarian youth training centers and their district assignment for Upper Bavaria.

In 2003, Birzele also promoted the founding of an association for the promotion of children and young people in Königsdorf, where he was represented on the board to the end.

"With his ideas and visions and the contribution of his great expertise, he was a very professional asset as the motor of open youth work in Königsdorf," say the current director of the youth settlement, Roland Herzog, and Hanspeter Schön from the children and youth development association.

A man of courage and perseverance

Birzele was also to be found privately wherever a helping hand was needed.

"He was always positive and optimistic," says his wife Maria Kolb-Birzele, whom he met and fell in love with in 1977 while studying social education.

"He was a person who could make things happen with courage, confidence, perseverance and determination and who approached people."

Birzele has been helping his fellow human beings since he was young.

"He had been with the St. George Boy Scouts since he was ten, took part in youth exchanges and, as a young man, organized a legendary trip down the Danube to Vienna on a raft he had built himself," reports Kolb-Birzele.

"I believe that all these experiences were formative for his professional career."

Birzele, who enjoyed spending time in nature, traveled and met friends and family, attended concerts and the theater and also took on numerous honorary posts.

Among other things, he was a youth alderman, a lecturer at the Catholic Foundation University of Applied Sciences in Munich and Benediktbeuern for over 22 years, and a municipal councilor in Königsdorf.

When he retired, Birzele moved with his wife to their home town of Bad Heilbrunn.

"There he felt quickly and warmly welcomed into the village community." And he once again demonstrated his organizational talent by setting up a jointly operated wood chip heating system with neighbors.

Birzele's death not only leaves an infinite gap in his wife and daughter Anna-Sophia.
