After 66 years: the mythical Prison 6 will be completely destroyed Israel today

2022-11-26T21:26:31.024Z

New apartments and commercial areas are expected to be built under the prison, which was established in the mid-1950s and was not always a good name for the conditions of incarceration in it.

As part of the Ministry of Defense's policy to remove IDF camps from the areas of demand, the Engineering and Construction Division began the evacuation of the "Prison 6" camp, which was recently moved to its new residence in the "Neve Tzedek" complex in Beit Lied. New apartments and commercial and employment areas are expected to be built under it.

Prison 6 was established in 1956 between Atlit and Haifa, on the ruins of the mandate police.

The idea to establish Prison 6 was conceived by the officer Yaakov Markovitch, after examining the deteriorating condition of the four existing prisons (according to him, the conditions in them would improve if the number of prisoners were reduced, AG).

Not a good name for prison conditions.

Major General Yosef Persman, commander of the Military Police Corps, pressed for the facility to be built, and it was finally built in 1956 during the Sinai War.

The complex, centered on the British Taggart fort, has become mythology in the IDF over the years.

Final evacuation

There were four companies in the prison: Company A - an open company for minor prisoners;

Company B - closed company;

Company C - the hardest and most closed in the prison, which contained prisoners convicted of theft, drug trafficking and drug use and even murder;

and company 600 - the women's company.

This is how the place looks today.

It should be noted that the conditions of confinement in prison 6 were not always well known, and over the years complaints were published regarding the treatment the prisoners received from the guards, who were all soldiers their age.

The prison was finally evacuated and abandoned last year and will now be completely evacuated.

The evacuation works include the removal of approximately 8,500 square meters of buildings and approximately 12,000 square meters of infrastructure.

The British building designated for preservation will not be damaged.

Deputy Director and Head of the Engineering and Construction Division at the Ministry of Defense, Erez Cohen: "The evacuation of Prison 6 and its relocation to a new and advanced camp in Beit Lied, which is in line with the needs of the IDF, are part of the marketing and relocation of IDF stores (SHAM), which is being led by the Ministry of Defense with The offices of the Prime Minister, the Treasury and the Israel Lands Authority. As part of it, the security system has already cleared thousands of dunams in the demand areas, on which thousands of new apartments are currently being built, alongside commercial and employment areas."

The famous prisoners' revolt

One of the most well-known events that took place in prison 6 is the inmates' rebellion that took place on Saturday, August 9, 1997. The rebellion broke out in Prisoner Company C, the company of the harshest prisoners, due to what they say was the disgraceful prison conditions.

The rebellion was led by Gideon Martin.

With the help of other prisoners, they took over the dining hall and gradually captured all the midshipmen and sergeants present in the company. Although an agreement was signed with them according to which they would receive better prison conditions in exchange for the release of the hostages, it was unilaterally canceled and the leaders of the rebellion received greater punishments and were transferred to a civilian prison. However, following the operation, changes were made to the structures of the military prisons, and to the conditions of the prison instructors and prisoners.
