Colmar: a solar-powered Ferris wheel on the Christmas market

2022-11-26T09:09:25.026Z

For the first time, a 36 m high structure equipped with photovoltaic panels is part of the device of the Colm Christmas market

This is the main attraction of the 2022 edition of the Colmar Christmas market, launched this Thursday, November 24.

A Ferris wheel equipped with 24 photovoltaic panels has been installed on Place de la Montagne-Verte.

“This structure is being used for the first time in France.

On each nacelle, a solar panel is fixed, which makes it possible to ensure its operation at a lower cost”, explains Éric Straumann, the mayor of Colmar.

An energy-efficient construction that is part of the city's desire to reduce its energy bills this winter.

"The consumption of the wheel at peak frequency is 60 amps, which is lower than that of a restaurant kitchen", assures the chosen one.

Perched 36 m high, customers will be able to admire the sublime panorama of the roofs of the city of Bartholdi and, on a clear day, the crests of the Vosges mountains.

The possibility of enjoying a dinner by a great chef in the cabins

“We are also going to offer a gastronomic experience to the public.

In the cabins, which can accommodate up to six people, you can enjoy a dinner concocted by a great chef every evening,” explains Éric Straumann.

For the occasion, the pace of the Ferris wheel will be slowed down.

Access to the attraction will cost 7 euros for adults and 5 euros for children aged 5 to 14.

The city of Colmar is counting on this Ferris wheel to inject momentum into the 2022 edition of the Christmas market, marked by the mass return of tourists this year.

By December 24, 1.5 million visitors are expected in the Haut-Rhin city.
