He would prefer someone sensible, someone from the center as US President, writes billionaire Elon Musk. And apparently means Florida's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.

Billionaire Elon Musk has announced his favorite for the US presidential election.

Of course, on Twitter, his latest acquisition, Musk shared when asked that he would support Ron DeSantis in 2024 should the rising Republican Party star run.

"My preference for the 2024 presidency is someone sensible and in the middle," Trump wrote.

He had hoped that would be the case under US President Joe Biden, but had "so far been disappointed".

When asked if he would support DeSantis in 2024, Musk replied, "Yes."

As if to apologise, he also wrote: "As a reminder, I was a significant supporter of the Obama and Biden presidencies and (grudgingly) voted for Biden over Trump."

DeSantis is one of the clear winners of the so-called midterms, during which numerous offices at the state level were re-appointed in addition to the congress.

The 44-year-old was re-elected governor of Florida by almost 20 percentage points.

He is currently considered the most promising opponent for ex-President Donald Trump, who wants to run again in the 2024 presidential election.

Similar to Trump, DeSantis represents ultra-right positions, but is not as surrounded by scandal.

His tenure as governor has been marked by opposition to coronavirus measures and broadsides against left camp, LGBTQ rights and immigrants - which has earned him respect from conservatives far beyond Florida's borders.

Musk had already called for the midterm elections earlier this month to elect a Republican congress to counterbalance Biden's Democrats.

However, the Democrats have dashed Republicans' hopes for a "red wave" in the midterm elections and retained control of the Senate, while the Republicans won only a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
