The fire brigade has problems with illegal parkers from time to time.

During an on-site visit, the emergency services showed how difficult it is to find a way.

Bad Tölz

- parking in Gries - that's a tricky subject.

In the old, winding district of Tölz, many more drivers want to park than there are parking spaces.

The municipal traffic control controls strictly - but the fire brigade always has problems making their way through the vehicles.

During an on-site visit, they demonstrated the specific difficulties that the city and the fire brigade are struggling with.

Hardly any space for the cart

It's a normal, cloudy Thursday evening.

As every day, cars are parked close together on the left and right side of the hospital road.

Things get exciting when a fire truck pulls in at “Eva's alteration tailoring shop” and drives in the direction of the fountain.

There is only a hand's breadth of space on both sides of the handcart.

Centimeter by centimeter, the machine operator Andreas Mayr moves the vehicle forward.

A tiler who parked on the sidewalk and caused the bottleneck recognized the mishap, stormed out of the house and guided Mayr between the cars.

Luckily it's just an exercise and not a matter of seconds.

"It's just stupid if you don't have time as a fire brigade"

"You can understand the craftsman," says Mayr, who has been involved with the fire brigade for 38 years and is on the road with a three-axle truck all day for work.

"The craftsman has to park his car somewhere, he can't carry the tiles over from the Isarkai parking lot.

It's just stupid when you don't have time as a fire brigade."

"Considerable risk potential" from old stoves

Fire brigade commander Thomas Fuchsgruber points out that the numerous old ovens pose a "considerable risk potential" in Gries, which is further increased by the narrow development.

He estimates that the fire brigade is called out ten to 15 times a year in this district.

In the rarest of cases, there are fires.

Only three weeks ago there were problems with a gas line, before that a toaster was burning.

Twice it was about a bird rescue.

The "daily bread" are door openings and rescue operations using the turntable ladder.

This is difficult in the old buildings because the stairwells are too narrow to transport the patients down on the stretcher.

"If you want to rescue someone, you can't park five meters ahead or ten meters behind," explains Mayr.

“You have to be able to drive there exactly.

The number of parking spaces in Gries drops from 115 to 85

The streets and sidewalks in Gries have changed significantly in recent months, and the number of parking spaces has fallen from 115 to 85.

In Mayr's opinion, this is a step in the right direction: "The situation at Jungmayrplatz used to be a disaster," the engineer recalls.

In some places, parking was so wild that he had to drive backwards in the direction of the boys' school.

And how does he feel about the situation now?

"A dream," is his reply.

Parking lot markings will be installed in the spring

Mayor Ingo Mehner announced that markings will still be placed in the converted Gries.

However, this will only happen in the spring, since warmer temperatures are necessary for this.

Only residents who have to pay a fee of 20 euros for a parking permit are allowed to park for a longer period of time in Gries: "That doesn't mean that you rent a parking space," emphasized Mehner.

"The parking ticket only gives you the right to park if something is free." If all spaces are occupied, residents can use the parking lot at the public utility company - comparatively inexpensively: "We kept an eye on it during the renovation and found it that he never reached his limits,” says Mehner.

You have to walk three to five minutes to get to the car.
