A tomcat from France has traveled a veritable odyssey in recent months.

His owners were desperately looking for him - and suddenly receive a message.

It's an incredible story with a happy ending that brings tears to your eyes.

A cat has been sorely missed in Colmar in Alsace since the end of June.

The owners would run down the street every night calling his name.

They also hung up posters of the missing Gustave - all to no avail.

Then, in mid-November, the redeeming news: Kater Gustave was found in Nuremberg, 400 kilometers away, as reported by Merkur.de.

Cat Gustave ends up as a found animal in the animal shelter: the owner from France is overjoyed

The tomcat was brought to the Nuremberg animal shelter as a found animal at the end of October.

Thanks to his microchip including registration and a "diligent colleague" who researched the registration office in France, the cat's origin could be clarified, as the animal rights activists describe on Facebook.

After the owners from France received the news, they made their way to Nuremberg as quickly as possible.

After more than four months, the French were able to hug their cat again.

In an emotional Facebook post, the owners thank everyone who contributed to the rescue.

"Without the animal shelter, we might never have found him." Life is full of wonderful surprises, "one should never lose hope".

What really happened will probably never be known.

Animal shelter appeals to cat owners: "Have your animals chipped and registered!"

Without a microchip and registration, the happy ending would probably not have happened.

Gustave's case shows how important chipping is.

"Once again we can only appeal: Have your animals chipped and registered!

This is the only way they can find their way back home over long distances or long periods of time," writes the animal shelter on Facebook.

Gustave has therefore covered a total of 396 kilometers in the last few months.

Exactly how – whether on foot or on a van – will remain a mystery forever.
