The Machado Quartet is still on the road to success with its current CD.
The focus is on the life stories of very special women, including those from their own families.
Unexpectedly, the album got a very topical dimension - and now also the "Global Music Award".
Bad Tölz/Miesbach – If you are looking for a CD title, you have to get creative.
Previous albums by the four nationally known guitarists of the Machado Quartet bore titles such as "Vierfühl" or "Haydn, Hirten, Hollywood" with the Christmas program.
The latest work is simply titled "#Maria" - with a hashtag in front of the name.
The black and white cover features a woman holding a small child's hand.
Idea was born during the lockdown period
This time it is an album that focuses on the life stories of very special women.
Sometimes a bit hidden, but the common thread runs through the work in many ways.
As reported, it was created during the lockdown period, when the artists from the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Miesbach districts were thinking about life developments.
One thing then fitted into the other like a puzzle, they say.
"But of course the album is also suitable for men," says Perry Schack with a grin.
The album contains both classical and modern, contemporary works and original compositions.
The musicians started with "Say a little prayer for you" by Aretha Franklin.
"The soul singer and composer represents all black women who fought for their rights," says Anna Prüflinger.
Then it's on to South America, with an excerpt from the opera "Maria de Buenos Aires" by Astor Piazzolla, more precisely with the picture "Yo soy Maria".
“Tema de Maria” follows later.
Last but not least, the title of the CD is an allusion to the Mother of God and to the divine in women.
The musicians hope that "#Maria" will appeal to all women.
The prize is for Bernhard Prüflinger's own compositions
What is special about the album, however, are Bernhard Prüflinger's own compositions.
Especially for this, the CD - like "Vierfühl" - has meanwhile been awarded the "Global Music Award" in the USA, in the instrumental category.
In four pieces, the guitarist devotes himself to the life story of his wife Sani, who comes from the Ukraine.
The works were created before the war.
Grandmother Zoe was quickly orphaned at the beginning of World War II and raised by a single woman.
"She spent her whole life trying to figure out what became of her father and sister," says Prüflinger.
"But she never found out anything." Zoe's daughter Zhanna grew up during the Cold War and became a world champion in rhythmic gymnastics in the 1970s.
Sani herself went to the West at the time of Perestroika, became a dancer and founded a family with Bernhard Prüflinger.
Their daughter Mimi bears – without them knowing it beforehand – the name of Zoe's foster mother.
The woman on the cover of "#Maria" is Zoe with little Sani.
The compositions are the heart of the CD.
Partly melancholy, partly joyful and full of hope for the future, they let the story of the four women emerge in the mind's eye.
A beautiful homage to their lives and today of unimagined topicality.
Because Zhanna and her family still live in Kyiv.
A film is currently being made about her.

Concert on November 26th in Tegernsee
If you want to hear the four musicians with "#Maria", you have to be patient a little longer.
The Machado Quartet will not be on the road live until 2023.
The next concert is a Christmas concert, which has had to be postponed since 2020 due to the corona: "Haydn, Hirten, Hollywood" is finally to take place on Saturday, November 26 at 7.30 p.m. in the Baroque Hall in Tegernsee.
The CD "#Maria" can be bought at www.machadoquartett.de in the shop and at Buch am Markt in Miesbach.
It costs 18 euros.
Tickets for the Christmas concert on Saturday are still available from the tourist information offices at Tegernsee and from the Munich ticket office.
