When building the new Michael Ende elementary school in Unterschleißheim, the motto is: save, save, save.

And yet it will cost well over 70 million euros.

Unterschleißheim

– linoleum instead of parquet, spruce instead of silver fir or wall lamps instead of stele lights: These are just a few of the savings proposals that the building committee is proposing to the city council for the new Michael Ende School.

The planning for the new building project has been going back and forth for years.

The building committee has now cut back on a few details.

The city councilors quickly agreed on 20 points and reduced the costs by almost one million euros without – according to the broad consensus – making compromises in terms of design and quality.

By far the most expensive project in the city

The construction on Raiffeisenstrasse is currently by far the most expensive project in the city.

The estimated cost of the primary school, which is due to open in 2026 and which will also house the music school, is now 73.8 million euros.

In an earlier round of austerity measures, the city councilors had reduced the cubature, including the underground car park, and decided that the sports hall would not be buried, as initially planned, but would be built above ground.

Because of the increased building material costs, there were now further savings proposals.

The city saves a lot of money on the floor covering: instead of parquet and polished screed, linoleum is to be laid throughout the school.

Annegret Harms (SPD) referred to the high school, where people have had good experiences with Lino: "There are nice color concepts for Lino, the children feel good there." Martin Reichart (FB), himself an architect by profession, emphasized: "Linoleum is also a natural product.”

Change of wood species

The city councilors also found it easy to change the type of wood for the wood-aluminium windows: instead of the silver fir, which is very popular at the moment, spruce works just as well.

Martin Reichart confirmed: "Spruce is no worse than silver fir, only cheaper, and lino is not a standard loss compared to parquet." saves.

The all-weather pitch gets a red surface because the green one is 8,600 euros more expensive.

On the facade, glare protection replaces the more expensive blinds in some areas.

Wall lights could also illuminate the sports field in the schoolyard in the evening, suggested Katharina Bednarek (SPD): They are attached to the school building and replace five stele lights.

school pond remains

Mayor Christoph Böck (SPD) wanted to keep other things.

Without protest, the committee voted for the school pond, for all three e-charging stations or the viewing windows between classrooms and multi-purpose rooms.

It is precisely these windows that are important to the teachers so that they can keep an eye on the children when working in groups in both rooms.

Some cost estimates raise doubts

Sometimes the city councilors wondered how some of the cost estimates could even come about: A total of 590,700 euros was earmarked for the construction site logistics, which is responsible for the procurement of materials.

This service is not necessary in the civil engineering and shell construction phase, explained the construction department.

Around 122,000 euros are saved here.

Jürgen Radtke (Greens) interjected several times: "Why are we only now discussing these design issues?"

Mayor Böck replied: "This is a completely normal planning process.

We are defining the design in detail for the first time.”
