The director of EL PAÍS, Pepa Bueno, will participate in the Guadalajara International Book Fair to talk about the challenges of journalism in times when the industry is looking for formulas to increase its income and attract new readers and faces strong challenges due to the irruption of false news , technological changes, populist movements that threaten freedoms and the war in Ukraine.

Bueno will discuss these issues with the Mexican journalist and columnist for this newspaper, Gabriela Warkentin.

The table will take place on Saturday, November 26 at 6:00 p.m. and is part of the meetings within the framework of FIL Pensamiento, a series of forums in which current issues in the social, political, economic fields are discussed. and environmental.

In previous editions of these meetings, the former head of the Spanish Government Felipe González, the former Uruguayan president Pepe Mujica, the late Cuban president Fidel Castro, the American philosopher Judith Butler or the Hungarian academic Ágnes Heller have participated.

Bueno travels to FIL at a time when EL PAÍS has undergone a profound transformation to adapt to the new ways in which readers approach information.

The newspaper has achieved 250,000 subscribers in two and a half years, since the newspaper adopted the paywall in May 2020. “It is a wonderful number.

I think we have reason to be very happy.

This is a sign of confidence in the way of telling what happens, our way of doing journalism”, Bueno said in a podcast published in the newspaper.

The director recalled that the 2008 crisis had an immediate impact on the media, which resulted in the reduction of workers in newsrooms and the working conditions of journalists.

Bueno has said that the number of subscribers to EL PAÍS represents a "light at the end of the tunnel" to guarantee the survival of quality journalism.

“We can find a way of financing that allows us to defend the journalism in which we believe, an essential journalism for democracy”, she stated.
