District – On December 11th, significant changes will come into effect on the Munich S-Bahn.

For the first time, a continuous 20-minute cycle to the terminal stations is to be offered.

The optimized use of vehicles should ensure greater timetable stability.

"The Munich S-Bahn is about to make the biggest timetable change in recent years," said Deutsche Bahn AG in a press release.

Next: From December 11th, passengers will benefit from many additional journeys and more frequent services.

On behalf of the Bavarian Railway Company, which plans, finances and controls local rail passenger transport in Bavaria, the range of services on all lines is being noticeably expanded.

Optimized vehicle deployment also ensures more stable operation.

“With around 160 additional journeys a day, this timetable change brings the most extensive improvements in many years and is a clear sign of the traffic turnaround and a strong rail system in Bavaria.

From December 11, our fleet will cover an additional 760,000 kilometers per year.

It is particularly important to me

that we can also improve reliability for our passengers by optimizing the timetable.

This is part of the "Strong S-Bahn Munich - Program 14plus" initiative, with which DB and the Free State want to ensure an efficient, robust and future-proof rail service," says S-Bahn boss Heiko Büttner.

Every 20 minutes across the board - more trips Monday to Friday

For the first time in the history of the S-Bahn, there will be a continuous 20-minute cycle on almost all lines from Monday to Friday from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. along the entire route to the respective terminal stations.

Only on individual sections in the outer areas of the S2 West, S4 West and S7 East can the S-Bahn not run every 20 minutes due to the infrastructure.

Here, too, the bars are noticeably compressed in many cases.

Longer stays at terminal stations reduce the likelihood of delays

Not only will the intervals be denser, reliability will also improve as a result of adjustments to the timetable change.

The main aim is to make operations more robust so that minor delays can be better buffered.

The focus is on the so-called turnaround time, i.e. the time spent at a terminal station until the return journey, because: If there are delays in trains going out of town that cannot be compensated for at the terminal station, the return journey will also start late.

In order to minimize this effect, the S-Bahn is planning to include additional vehicles from the existing fleet on lines S1 and S7, thereby increasing turnaround times in Wolfratshausen to 30 minutes and at the airport to 25 minutes.

There are similar improvements in the afternoons on line S2 in Petershausen.

Overview of timetable changes from Monday to Friday

S1 Freising/Flughafen – Leuchtenbergring

Numerous additional journeys, particularly between Neufahrn and Freising, enable continuous 20-minute intervals from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the entire scheduled route.

Trains sometimes leave the airport 4 minutes earlier than before.

In the future, two train sections will always travel to the airport and one train section to Freising.

S2 Petershausen/Altomünster – Erding

Numerous additional journeys between Dachau and Petershausen and between Markt Schwaben and Erding enable continuous 20-minute intervals from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the entire route between Petershausen and Erding.

In the future, the S-Bahn will also run between Dachau and Altomünster every half hour during off-peak hours (previously every hour).

Thus, there is a continuous half-hourly cycle from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Every second train runs from or to Ostbahnhof without changing trains and thus offers an additional fourth journey every hour between Dachau and Ostbahnhof.

S3 Mammendorf – Holzkirchen

Numerous additional journeys between Deisenhofen and Holzkirchen as well as between Maisach and Mammendorf enable continuous 20-minute intervals from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the entire route.

S4 Geltendorf – Trudering (– Ebersberg)

Numerous additional journeys enable continuous 20-minute intervals from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. between Grafrath and Trudering.

Additional trains also run between Grafrath and Geltendorf.

Due to the dense sequence of trains on the route, some of these operate as express S-Bahn trains with fewer intermediate stops.

Additional trips between Starnberg and Tutzing

S6 Tutzing - Ebersberg

Numerous additional journeys, particularly between Starnberg and Tutzing, enable continuous 20-minute intervals from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. between Tutzing and Grafing.

The departure times between Grafing and Ebersberg will be optimized so that together with the Filzenexpress there will in future be a minute-exact 20-minute cycle.

S7 Wolfratshausen – Kreuzstraße

Numerous additional journeys between Höllriegelskreuth and Wolfratshausen as well as between Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn and Kreuzstraße enable a continuous 20-minute cycle from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. between Wolfratshausen and Aying (exception: at 10:04 a.m. no additional departure from Wolfratshausen due to a goods train running at the same time) and a 20/40 minute cycle between Aying and Kreuzstrasse.

The additional trains do not stop in Dürrnhaar and Peiß.

Extended S-Bahn service between Herrsching and the airport

S8 Herrsching – Airport

Numerous additional journeys between Weßling and Herrsching enable a continuous 20-minute cycle from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the entire route of the S8.
