Will there be snow in Bavaria this Christmas?

Weather expert Dominik Jung exclusively explains to Merkur.de what the current trend looks like.

Munich – The well-known Christmas weather question: will it snow on Christmas Eve?

In just under four weeks the time has come, Christmas is practically just around the corner.

The question of snow in Bavaria at Christmas time is therefore moving further into focus.

It often goes hand in hand with the attitude that there used to be much more snow on Christmas Eve.

However, meteorologists agree that this is not true.

White Christmas in Bavaria: probability decreases every year

"This statement is false.

And even if one or the other may have experienced a white Christmas, that doesn't mean that there always has to be snow at Christmas," explains meteorologist Björn Goldhausen from

Wetteronline

.

“A white Christmas is simply an idyllic ideal.

A white festival has always been the exception in Germany.” Weather expert Dominik Jung has a similar view.

"Even 30 or 40 years ago, this wasn't the case every year," explains meteorologist

Merkur.de

from

IPPEN.MEDIA.

"

It's a fallacy that we would have had a white Christmas every year."

Of course, the probability of a white Christmas has been falling continuously for years.

The reason is global warming and the increasingly warm winters.

"And so the already low probability of a white Christmas in Bavaria continues to decrease," concludes Jung of

wetter.net.

White Christmas: Current trends do not yet paint a clear picture

The weather models are currently unable to provide a concrete picture of what the weather will be like at Christmas.

Only initial trends can be identified.

"Between the 2nd and 3rd of Advent, there are signs of a strong cooling off," explains Jung.

"It could get really cold there and snow showers would also be conceivable in Bavaria." In his current forecast, he speaks of a "cold whip" in this context, which will cause heating costs to skyrocket.

And at Christmas?

"There may be something in the bush when it comes to winter weather!" So far, however, these are all just trends, a forecast cannot yet be given. "It's all still quite uncertain."

Winter 2022 could still become an “ice winter”.

What is clear: autumn 2022 was far too warm for this time of year.

And the current trend also assumes that the winter will be far too warm.

However, Jung is still skeptical.

"I would wait and see if it actually gets very cold between the 2nd and 3rd of Advent ... who knows, maybe winter will take a completely different turn after all!" For him everything is still open, including a " Ice Winter" could be in there.

"It could get really expensive given the current energy prices."
