The European Car Of The Year (ECOTY) competition for 2023 enters the last row.

At the end of last week, the list of the seven models that advanced to the final stage was published from an initial list of 45 models that was first revealed about three months ago.

Several models that were no less interesting than the aforementioned seven did not qualify for the final stage, including the impressive Lucid Air, the electric Lexus RZ with its unique steering system, the sporty Toyota GR86 in a classic style that is almost extinct, and the high-tech and luxurious BMW i7 electric.

This list also includes no less than 13 electric models coming from China and Vietnam, but as mentioned none of them qualified a stage.

The 'Car of the Year in Europe' competition has been held continuously since 1964 and dozens of automotive journalists from the continent (at certain times also from Israel) participate in it, choosing the important car that began to be sold on the European market in the past year.

This is one of the most prestigious competitions in the automotive world, but in recent years it has dimmed its glow after a number of puzzling wins raised criticisms of the politicization of the competition and positive preference towards European models.

However, last year history was made when for the first time a Korean car (Kia EV6) won the competition.

The seven models that made it to the finals are:

Jeep Avenger

– Jeep's small, electric recreational vehicle and the first model of the brand to be based on a platform from the Stalantis Group.

Nissan Ariya

  - Nissan's electric crossover based on a dedicated electric platform shared with Renault.

Renault Astral

- Renault's new compact crossover that takes the place of the Cadjar.

Subaru Soltra/Toyota

bZ4X

– the joint electric crossover of Toyota and Subaru and the first in a series of electric models on the new platform.

Volkswagen

ID Buzz

– a useful electric van with a retro design that nods to the classic transporter from the 60s.

Peugeot 408

– a large crossover-coupe with an impressive design which we will examine soon.

Kia Niro

- a new generation of Kia's compact crossover offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric drive configurations.
