Contemporary dance: Damien Jalet and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui or the art of the splits

The two Belgians, who also choreographed for Beyoncé and Madonna, found themselves at the Ballet de Genève, of which Cherkaoui had just taken over as director.


One, Flemish, the other Walloon.

They met in 2000. It was in a modern ball, in Belgium.

Less than an hour in the blaze to teach step combinations to amateurs.

They were 24 years old.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui came from dance, Damien Jalet from theatre.

Today, they practice the splits.

In terms of contemporary choreography, they are two sacred monsters.

Their name on the poster, and from London to Paris, Berlin or Gothenburg, the room is full.

Their meeting at the Ballet de Genève, of which Cherkaoui had just taken over, inviting Jalet as associate choreographer, turned the gaze towards Switzerland.
