In December, the state takes over the payments on account for gas and heat customers, after which the gas price brake takes effect.

What you need to know about December emergency aid.

Hanover/Bremen – From December, Germany is helping its citizens with several billion euros in the energy crisis.

Before the electricity and gas price brakes take effect between January 2023 and April 2024, the state will take over the down payment from gas and district heating customers for the month of December with emergency aid.

In recent months, the prices for gas and electricity in Germany have shot up to unprecedented heights due to the Ukraine war. In the meantime, the chaos is clearing up and prices are gradually falling again.

But the approaching winter promises to be long and cold.

This is reported by kreiszeitung.de.

Nevertheless, many citizens in Germany - and also smaller companies - need active support, because otherwise many would no longer know how to heat their own four walls in winter or how to keep them running.

The good thing: the state is already helping out with the emergency aid in December and is taking on the down payment for gas customers.

This means gas customers and tenants who have a contract directly with their gas supplier do not have to make any payments in December.

The state does this for them.

Thus, in addition to tenants and small companies, homeowners also receive noticeable relief from the now enormous gas prices.

Emergency aid in December: Gas suppliers do not have to be paid in December

And that's how you get immediate help for gas customers in December before the gas price brake: If the gas supplier has direct debit authorization, he simply won't make any debits in December.

If, on the other hand, payment is made by standing order, this should be suspended for the month of December 2023.

Yes, be careful: there is an exception in the state of Bremen.

Since the provider swb is usually a supplier of both gas and electricity for its customers, the amount for gas and electricity is paid here together.

The provider will therefore still demand the deduction for gas in December, but will refund it retrospectively, a spokeswoman told

Tenants without their own gas connection must settle the emergency aid directly with their landlord

The situation is different if the tenant pays the down payment for gas directly to the landlord.

Because then the emergency aid must flow between the landlord and the tenant and not between the state and the citizen.

The relief can therefore only be given to the tenants once the ancillary cost settlement for the year 2022 has been completed.

However, this may take a while because landlords have until the end of 2023 to do so.

Gas price emergency aid in December: No rule without exception

As in real life, there is no rule for emergency aid for gas customers in December without exception for tenants who settle their additional costs directly with the landlord.

For example, if the landlord has increased the advance payments since February of this year, the tenant is entitled to reduce the December rent by this amount.

This also applies to leases concluded in the past nine months (i.e. since February 202).

If this is the case, the tenant is entitled to reduce the operating costs incurred by 25 percent.

If the tenant has already paid the deduction for the operating costs for the month of December, he can ask his landlord to refund him the overpaid amount.

Another possibility is informing the landlord informally that the next payment will be reduced by exactly the same amount.

Otherwise, tenants who pay their operating costs directly to the landlord will only be reimbursed with the operating cost statement for 2022. And landlords have time until the end of 2023 for them.

Anyone who purchases district heating will also be supported by the state with emergency aid in December.

This relief takes place in December in the form of a lump sum.

The down payment from last September is used as a basis for this.

20 percent is added to this deduction and paid out in order to do justice to the increased prices in the energy sector.

The state has also come up with a special rule for owners of a heat pump.

This is intended as a supplement to the electricity price brake, which will apply from January 2023.
