History never repeats itself, but there are peculiarities in Russian political construction that are worth remembering.

The Russian regime, perhaps even more so than the Soviet communist regime, was built around a personality, a leader, on whom the whole pyramid of power depends.

This is even truer with Vladimir Putin, because when he came to power he destroyed institutions, reduced local initiatives to nothing and erased the embryonic State that Boris Yeltsin had begun to create.
