Sayol Dachiev was 23 years old, he was born in 1999, the year Vladimir Putin came to power.
His short life ended on October 13 in Ukraine.
A month later, a compact crowd gathered in silence in the gymnasium which hosts his funeral in Oulan-Udé, the Buryat capital, some 5300 km from Kherson.
Visitors will only see him in photos: out of modesty, his zinc coffin is closed.
His relatives, heads bowed, are seated in the front row of the ceremony.
This is not the first time that the Dashiev family has been bereaved.
Last March, the young sapper's uncle also gave his life to the Russian "special operation".
Sayol leaves behind his parents, a brother and a 2-year-old son.
The scene is one more episode of a disastrous refrain at the "Loukodrome" sports complex in Oulan-Oude.
