Karl Lauterbach has been part of the traffic light government for a year now and is therefore often present in state buildings.

In his opinion, however, the range of food there leaves a lot to be desired.

Berlin – Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has been in office for a year.

One topic that the politician has focused his attention on since then is the corona virus.

The conclusion to his previous tenure, which he draws when asked by

RTL

, is surprisingly culinary.

Lauterbach reports the “greatest surprise”: the focus is on the menu

"One year Minister of Health - What was the biggest surprise?" Asked the broadcaster Lauterbach.

For his part, Lauterbach surprisingly and fairly quickly came to speak of a circumstance that apparently surprised him in the long term: the offer in the canteen.

"I eat vegetarian and very low in salt, and there's nothing for me!" Lauterbach says with a little indignation.

Diabetics and high blood pressure patients in particular are recommended to eat a low-salt diet – but the extent to which the minister's diet is influenced by medical reasons was not discussed.

Rather, from time to time he got the impression that the chef came “from Munich”, which he attributed to the wide range of meat products.

Weisswurst and mustard pots are clear symbols of Bavarian cuisine for the minister.

On the other hand, he would prefer a wide range of vegetables, such as spinach, as well as fish dishes – and fruit shouldn’t be missing either.

However, the latest findings on the effect of a banana protein in defending against the corona virus are probably not behind this requirement.

However, Lauterbach also made a “mocking” comment about former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), who was replaced by the traffic light government in 2021.

He still remembers his first visit to the Bundestag canteen in 2005, when Merkel wanted to help himself to the meat products.

"Merkel grabbed the meatballs, I couldn't prevent it," said the nutrition-conscious Minister of Health.

When asked about possible consequences, Lauterbach gave the all-clear.

"She got along very well with the meatballs and it's up to her what she eats," said the minister, "I think she likes to eat more vigorously." In particular, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen have repeatedly made suggestions for optimizing canteen food – perhaps the suggested options are more to Lauterbach's taste.
