The Grassroots Market Alliance released the survey results, and most of the respondents support the regular holding of community markets in all 18 districts of Hong Kong.

More than 90% of the interviewees agree that community markets provide grassroots women and young people with entrepreneurial and employment opportunities under the epidemic situation, provide development opportunities for local shops, revitalize the use of idle land, and can also be used as a poverty alleviation measure.

The alliance recommends that the government open the public space of public housing estates, the underside of flyovers and other idle land to regional organizations to apply for markets, and suggests that the government establish a "Market Seed Fund" to help NGOs apply for resources to operate grassroots markets and promote community economic development.

The alliance suggests that the government should establish a transparent application mechanism for the "weekend market" and lower the application threshold so that the public can apply from bottom to top to set up stalls in the weekend market, so as to ensure that grassroots citizens can participate and truly benefit.

The alliance also advocates holding physical stalls in public spaces, allowing grassroots citizens, women and young people to sell their own specialty products, providing entrepreneurship and employment opportunities, and long-term poverty alleviation.

The alliance also recommends that the government establish a "Market Seed Fund". Non-profit-making groups can obtain funding through government funds to apply for resources to operate grassroots markets, effectively and more stably and long-term support grassroots stall owners to operate stalls, and promote community economic development.

The alliance hopes that the government will open vacant markets, school buildings, public spaces in public housing estates, the bottom of flyovers, vacant cooked food centers and other idle land to regional organizations to bid for the market.

In addition, the alliance also recommends that the government establish bazaars as poverty alleviation measures to assist grassroots employment and develop the community economy, and appoint a dedicated department to handle and coordinate bazaar applications in a unified manner, simplify the application mechanism, and speed up the approval application process.

The alliance also joined hands with 20 community groups and social welfare organizations to resume the first large-scale grassroots market after the epidemic in Meifu today - "Hong Kong Market Festival 2022-23".
