Former District Administrator Manfred Pointner (centre) worked tirelessly for the district, also as head of the protection community - here with (from left) District Administrator Helmut Petz, Freising's Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher, Herbert Knur, former mayor of Berglern, and Franz Heilmeier, mayor of Neufahrn and Chairman of the Protection Association.

Former district administrator Manfred Pointner was dismissed as head of the protection community.

He was attested to "infinite merits".

Freising

– It was a moving moment when the former Freising district administrator Manfred Pointer stepped up to the lectern in the town hall hall and described the momentum in which the idea of resistance against the airport in the Erdinger Moos really germinated.

“We had an orchard at home with beautiful apples.

When I went to get some again, the whole place had disappeared.” What followed was an unprecedented resistance to airport construction in general and the construction of a third runway in particular – also as chairman of the protection association from 2014 to 2022. "For that," said District Administrator Helmut Petz, "I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

The key experience

On Saturday, Pointner was officially dismissed as the long-standing board member of the protective association Erding-Nord, Freising and the surrounding area.

It became very quiet in the town hall when Pointner talked about his motives and his fight against the airport.

In the early phase, the planned major airport didn't really interest him that much.

However, the demolition of his birthplace and parental home in Franzheim was the key experience in taking action against the building.

“Now I've been involved with the airport almost my whole life.

Formerly as a lawyer in the district office and also as mayor of Hallbergmoos.

Then I became district administrator – and the airport was still a big topic!” Because this very topic annoyed him more and more, he always tried to join the fight against the mammoth project.

"Why they were against it, I didn't care at first," said Pointner in retrospect.

An important phone call with Hubert Aiwanger

What he still vividly remembers is a phone call with FW boss Hubert Aiwanger when he asked Pointner for advice about the upcoming coalition with the CSU.

"I told him from his sickbed that he could enter into the coalition - but only on the condition that he was against the third runway."

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

"You have achieved a lot, even that there were only two runways instead of four - but you often got a bloody nose in the process," Franz Heilmeier, the current chairman of the protection association, looked back.

Pointner impressed many with his resistance struggle, including Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher.

"You helped shape my political time," said Eschenbacher, who continued to urge vigilance with regard to the third runway.

moving words

"Manfred Pointner has campaigned with outstanding expertise for those affected in the vicinity of the airport," confirmed the former mayor of Berglern and long-standing chairman of the aircraft noise commission, Herbert Knur, in his laudatory speech.

In his opinion, Pointner owes an infinite amount of thanks - including the moratorium imposed by the Bavarian government, which means that the construction of a third runway by 2023 is no longer an issue.

Knur's final words were moving: "May our Lord God reward you," said Knur, "for the good you have done for the people."
