With the aim of raising awareness among the private sector about the commitments of the Nairobi Summit for Population and Development 2019, the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund, held a workshop today, at the Dama Rose Hotel in Damascus.
A number of private sector entities, including the Chambers of Industry and Commerce, will participate in the workshop, in addition to syndicates of doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, medical centers, private pharmaceutical companies, universities and private banks.
The axes of the two-day workshop focus on the national programs implemented with the support of the Fund within the axes (population, development, gender, gender-based violence and youth), the Nairobi summit and Syria's commitments to it, and the developmental practice of the private sector related to the recommendations.
The head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Engineer Samar al-Sibai, stated in her speech that the inauguration of the Family Protection Unit in 2017 had a major role in attracting women survivors of violence with their children, and providing them with all services, from residence to legal, psychological, health, economic and educational empowerment, noting The Commission, in cooperation with the Fund, has established an observatory of violence, which will be launched soon. It is linked to police stations, health centers and associations working in this field.
Al-Sebaei pointed out that the mission of the observatory is to enter information about all cases of violence against women and children to be collected in the observatory and to know the areas that need rapid intervention and to study the necessary aspects of intervention, whether educational, health or economic, noting that the future plans of the authority are to introduce the services provided by the unit and access in a manner Bigger for battered women in different regions.
The Assistant Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Omar Ballan, explained that the Fund works on a number of key aspects, including reproductive health, gender equality, combating gender-based violence, youth empowerment and social integration, and that it supports all activities carried out in the Family Protection Unit, indicating that Orientation to the private sector is for the role it provides in society through a range of aspects, including developmental, educational and humanitarian.
Director of Population at the Authority, Waddah al-Rakkad, made a presentation in which he indicated that Syria's commitments at the Nairobi conference centered on issues of reducing levels of child mortality as a result of childbirth, increasing rates of family planning, reducing early marriage rates in society, and developing legislation and laws to protect the family in various aspects, pointing out that Syria It has worked through a number of programs and a number of studies carried out by the Commission in order to advance these commitments.
For his part, a member of the People's Assembly, Hadi Mashhadiya, pointed to the role of the People's Assembly in these commitments by enacting legislation and laws that protect the family, indicating that the Social Affairs and Labor Committee in the parliament works in constant coordination with the authority to serve the protection of the family in many issues.
It is noteworthy that the Nairobi International Summit on Population and Development was held in 2019, during which focus was placed on empowering women, youth, persons with disabilities and displaced families to take their participatory role in development.
