Is the Qatar 2022 World Cup a controversial tournament?

(CNN Spanish) --

More than eight years have passed since it happened, and yet it doesn't seem so far away.

On July 13, 2014, the German team achieved the greatest glory of men's soccer after beating Argentina by the slightest difference in extra time in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil. And now, in Qatar, the architect of that championship World Cup, Mario Götze, returns with his team in a surprise call-up and after a long absence.

The title goal in 2014

The Teutonic team (like the Albiceleste) was full of figures, but the German hero who scored the only goal of the game came from the bench.

At minute 87, Mario Götze came on as a substitute for Miroslav Klose and, shortly after (at minute 112 of extra time), he dropped the ball on his chest in the Argentine area to score the World Cup winning goal.

Then, total ecstasy and championship celebration for the Germans, who won their fourth World Cup in Brazil and became the first European team to win a World Cup on the American continent.

At that time, although Götze was not a starter in the Teutonic squad, he was already an established figure in the German league, first making his debut for Borussia Dortmund in 2010 and then moving to Bayern Munich in 2013.

However, after the 2014 goal, Götze's career seems a bit hazy to some football fans.

And perhaps this is due to the multiple injuries and illnesses that the player has suffered.

Time at Bayern Munich and injuries

The player was with Bayern Munich from July 2013 to July 2016, during which time, among other trophies, he won the German league three times.

However, due to injuries, Götze missed around 30 games (almost a full season) in this same period, so his time with the Bavarians was irregular.

Prior to 2014, Götze had already proven to be an injury-prone player.

According to the specialized Transfermarkt site, in 2012 he had a pubic injury that kept him off the pitch for 77 days, while in 2013 he had two almost consecutive tears that left him without activity for more than 100 days.

From then until the World Cup in Brazil, the footballer remained without major injuries.

It was not until October 2015 that Götze suffered the most important injury in his career (up to that moment).

It was a torn adductor fiber when he played for Munich, which left him out of action for 116 days.

Return with Dortmund, more injuries and a metabolic disorder

In July 2016, Götze returned to Dortmund, a team with which he had already won two German leagues in 2011 and 2012.

However, he had several muscle injuries from his return until the beginning of 2017, when further studies were carried out and a metabolic disorder was discovered that forced him to take indefinite leave and, therefore, put his professional career at risk.

Transfermarkt indicates that Götze was absent due to this metabolic disorder from February 27, 2017 to July 6 of the same year;

that is, 129 days, just over four months or 18 games.

From that moment until his departure from Dortmund in October 2020, he had other injuries that left him out for a few games, but none of much relevance (except for the torn ankle ligaments he suffered at the end of 2017 to be absent 38 days).

In his second spell with Dortmund, Götze won a German Cup and a German Super Cup, although he was never able to fully establish himself with the team due, again, to injuries.

The current stage in clubs

In October 2020, after ending his contract with Dortmund, Mario Götze arrived as a free transfer to PSV from the Netherlands.

His time here lasted until July 2022. In those almost two years, the team won a Dutch Cup and a Dutch Super Cup.

However, the irregularity was repeated again.

As recorded by Trasnfermarkt, between injuries and absences due to illness, he missed 29 games with PSV.

On July 1 of this year, Götze returned to football in his country for a new stage, this time with Eintracht Frankfurt.

So far, he has only missed one game through injury, which occurred in early October.

Led by Götze, who has been the undisputed starter, Eintracht Frankfurt is fifth in the Bundesliga (German league) and recently qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League after finishing second in group D.

In the Champions League round of 16, the team will face Naples, which is one of the clubs that are currently playing the best in Europe.

If the injuries respect it, it is very likely that we will see Mario Götze as a starter in that knockout key, which will be played between February 14 and March 15, 2023.

Mario Götze's return to the national team

When the Germany coach, Hansi Flick, made the announcement of his call-up for Qatar 2022, the surprise had a first and last name: Mario Götze was returning to the national team after five years.

The 30-year-old midfielder, back to his best with a return to the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt this season, is one of Flick's cards: "Mario Goetze is there. 2017 was the last time. Mario is totally happy and us too for having it. It gives us a lot of options," he said.

But in the bitter debut of Germany Götze was one of those pointed out.

The 2014 hero entered when Germany were leading (he entered for Jamal Musiala) and Japan came alive and ended up winning, in what has been one of the surprises of the tournament.

this Sunday Germany has its litmus test against Spain.

A "final" between two previous champions: Spain calm after the defeat of Costa Rica and Germany in need after the defeat against Japan.

Götze probably won't start, but – just like in 2014 – he can come in during the game to be Germany's hero when they need him most.
