Weißenburger Straße in Haidhausen should be taboo for cars in the future.

That's what the SPD and the Greens are calling for.

But what do the people of Munich think of this?

Munich – On Saturday (November 26) the SPD provided information on what the new pedestrian zone is all about with a stand on Pariser Platz.

Anne Hübner, co-initiator of the stand and SPD faction leader in the city council, thinks that the small shopping street should be closed to cars as a matter of urgency.

“During the week, no road user can easily get through.

There is not enough space for pedestrians, no space for cars and cyclists risk their lives here,” says the Haidhausen resident.

Munich: Residents express concerns that the street could become a party mile at night

Families in particular are happy about the plans.

Deborah Katona and Marian Böhm with their daughter Mathilda also got information at the stand.

The young family lives on Weißenburger Strasse.

You can't go fast enough with the pedestrian zone.

"A lot of young families live here and it's very cramped at the moment.

With the pedestrian zone I would be less worried about my daughter.”

Individual critical voices, such as that of Paul Ferschl, mix with a lot of anticipation.

The long-time resident is concerned that the street could become a party mile at night.

The plumber also fears for the underground parking space for his company car: "If you can no longer drive in there, that's not correct.

You have to talk about that.

Especially with the local residents.

After all, they are directly affected.”

Hübner and her team at the information stand can dispel most doubts.

In a model phase in 2023, it should first be tried out how the people of Haidhausen can cope with their car-free Weißenburger Straße.
