Well, it works: After the street lighting was converted to LED technology in 2020, there were massive protests from residents on Böbinger Strasse and along the through road in Peißenberg because they thought the lighting was too bright.

Now the illuminance has been noticeably reduced.

Peißenberg – LED lighting is sustainable because it saves energy.

There is no doubt about that.

But when in 2020 the street lighting along the through road and on Böbinger Straße was changed by the municipal works on behalf of the market, there was trouble.

Many facades and private gardens were illuminated as bright as day by the LED lamps, which caused great displeasure among some homeowners.

Improvements to the setting angle of the lamp sockets brought small improvements.

A family living on the main street went to court anyway.

The procedure is still ongoing.

The former municipal works management said that subsequent dimming was technically and for traffic safety reasons not possible.

The lighting design was based on the DIN specifications.

According to reports, however, the legal dispute was also a reason for the reluctance of the municipal works.

You should wait for the verdict.

All 160 lamps were readjusted

But in the course of the planning for the conversion of all street lamps in the local area to LED technology, which is being conceptually developed by Dominik Böhlein from "Energy Vision Franconia", the first conversion section was examined again closely.

The specifications for energy saving issued by the Bavarian state government were also included in the assessment.

The result: The illuminance can be reduced after 10 p.m. both in the main night and in the half-night mode.

As a result, several lights were dimmed as a test on a section of Böbinger Strasse and in the parking lot at "Rigi-Rutsch'n", which was done by reprogramming the control technology.

The results brought the desired result, so it was decided to readjust all 160 lamps that had been converted in 2020.

Mayor Frank Zellner is also satisfied with the result.

The head of the town hall explained that it was about reconciling the concerns of road safety, energy saving and the interests of the local residents.

According to Zellner, the light emissions and the scattered light generated by reflection have been significantly reduced.

The retrofit will also have a noticeable effect in terms of energy: "By March we will have saved around 9,400 kilowatt hours over the winter," announced the mayor.

Local residents give positive feedback

Residents have already given positive feedback on the change.

Zellner also wants to talk to the plaintiff family again: "I don't want to wait until there is a judgment at some point."

The mayor speaks of a "learning process" in connection with the first conversion phase.

The LED conversion for the entire location is now to be much more citizen-friendly and quieter – in other words, the individual beam angles should be more carefully considered.

In order not to illuminate house facades or gardens, but only the streets and sidewalks, according to Zellner, masts must also be replaced if necessary: "I don't want any trouble with the residents," emphasizes the mayor.

The planning for the conversion will be completed in the coming year.

In 2024, the entire local area is to be converted to LED street lighting.

The federal government has already approved the funding, but not yet from the Free State of Bavaria.

"We're still waiting for that," says Zellner.
