Tesla is opening its full autonomous driving option to all Tesla owners in North America even though it is still a trial version. The authorities are concerned, but can't do much about it. Photographs: Manufacturer

Elon Musk continues to make headlines.

Last week, the entrepreneur and owner of the Tesla manufacturer took time off from his war on Twitter to tweet:

"Tesla

Full Self-Driving Beta is available to anyone in North America who would like to operate it from the car's screen, assuming they have purchased it.

Thanks to the AutoPilot development team for the important milestone."

Tesla's Full Self-Driving Beta (or FSD for short) system is an upgrade of the familiar AutoPilot system to a level that allows fully autonomous driving without holding the steering wheel but under the supervision of the driver.

Until now, some of the customers who had already paid for the system could not activate it, because they did not receive a sufficient rating in Tesla's indices to meet the requirements of the insurance companies.

Despite the temptation to think that this is fully autonomous driving, it is still a development version and the driver needs to pay attention and supervise the driving of the vehicle.

This has been proven more than once after in recent months a number of videos have been published online revealing that the FSD system still does not work smoothly and tends to make mistakes that border on the tangible danger of a serious accident.

At the same time, the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating the possibility that Tesla deliberately misled the public, after a lawsuit filed against the company in California claimed that the use of the name AutoPilot for Tesla's driver assistance systems made drivers think that the car had the option of fully autonomous driving, which led to quite a few accidents ways.

In the meantime, the National Road Safety Authority NTHSA admits that the laws currently do not allow barriers to be placed in front of the activation of assistance systems and autonomous driving that are not yet sufficiently mature and does not have the possibility to oblige the car manufacturers to act in accordance with its guidelines, when it criticizes the nature of Tesla's accessibility of the FSD features to the general the public

Musk himself admitted in an interview that this is possible due to the lack of regulatory involvement in the US, unlike Europe, where the FSD is not offered to customers.
