Energy crisis: swimming in schools threatened by the closure of swimming pools

DECRYPTION – Learning to swim in schools, described as a “national priority” by the Ministry of National Education, is affected due to energy prices which force certain swimming pools to close.


Childish cries, whistles and the smell of chlorine: an ordinary Monday morning at the Montbauron swimming pool in Versailles, in the Yvelines.

Wearing caps of different colors to distinguish the groups of levels, dozens of CM1-CM2 schoolchildren take over the 50m Olympic pool and the small learning pool, under the supervision of their teachers and lifeguards.

Learning to swim in schools is described as a

“national priority”

by the Ministry of National Education.

But the rise in energy prices is directly threatening this practice.

Since the start of the school year, the alerts have multiplied.

On September 5, the company Vert Marine, manager of 80 sports and leisure facilities across France, announced the closure of 30 establishments, including the Montbauron swimming pool.

The latter have gradually reopened, but the concern persists.
