Fuels: after a sharp rise, prices at the pump have started to fall

2022-11-28T15:33:23.803Z

The bill for a fill-up fell a few cents last week. Motorists benefit in particular from the drop in prices on the markets.

Motorists can breathe, soaring prices at the pump stopped quickly.

After jumping two weeks ago following the reduction in rebates offered by the State as well as by TotalEnergies, the refueling bill has come down slightly in recent days.

Friday, on average, the liter of diesel was thus displayed at 1.8611 euro, down four cents over seven days.

The decline is less marked for gasoline, whose label was reduced by only 3.6 cents.

A liter of SP95 then cost 1.7565 euro, against 1.7152 euro for the SP95-E10 and 1.8126 euro for the SP98.

This drop is not enough to offset the significant increase - around ten cents for the various fuels - caused by the reduction in discounts per liter in mid-November.

Current prices remain higher than in previous weeks, but motorists are still benefiting from falling market prices.

The barrel of Brent has fallen considerably in recent weeks, carried away by fears of a global recession and by fears surrounding the return of the Covid-19 epidemic in China.

Remaining around 90 to 100 dollars since the beginning of November, it has seen its value decline since, until it was close to 80 dollars on Monday.

This momentum could continue in the coming weeks.

Since the beginning of the month, oil has lost more than 10 dollars per barrel, bringing it back to its level of the beginning of the year, before the war in Ukraine.

The consensus of economists polled by Bloomberg as of November 23 is also down with a median price of Brent in 2023 at 96.3 dollars per barrel

,” notes IFPEN on Monday.

The International Energy Agency also expects a decline in demand, but diesel, normally imported from Russia, is likely to be more expensive: "

Competition for barrels of non-Russian diesel will be fierce [...].

The increase in refining capacity will eventually help ease tensions on diesel.

However, until then, if prices get too high, further demand destruction may be unavoidable for market imbalances to unwind

,” the international body warned this month.

In addition, tricolor fuel consumers will feel the full force of the final abolition of the last discounts on prices at the pump, at the beginning of January.

The government promises, for its part, to put in place a measure specifically dedicated to large rollers, in order to give a little air to the main interested parties.
