Several hundred people are said to have been killed and tens of thousands imprisoned: the regime in Iran is cracking down on protesters. Now the interior ministers want to decide on a deportation stop for the country for the time being.

Starting Wednesday, the interior ministers of the federal states will meet for three days for their autumn conference, and dealing with refugees from Iran will also be an issue.

Due to the tense political situation in the country, the ministers have now agreed in advance to stop deportations.

"We agree that there will be no deportations there until further notice," said the chairman of the conference of interior ministers, Bavaria's department head Joachim Herrmann (CSU), in Munich.

Only in the case of threats and serious criminals should this continue to be possible after an individual assessment.

Herrmann called on the federal government to provide the federal states with an updated assessment of the situation in Iran.

This must then be the basis for further decisions.

In Iran, people across the country have been protesting against the country's political leadership for more than two months.

The UN Human Rights Council decided on Thursday to conduct an independent investigation into the continued violence by the Iranian security apparatus against peacefully demonstrating people.

Germany and Iceland had submitted a corresponding resolution.

Tensions between Berlin and Tehran

Recently, the tone between Tehran and Berlin had sharpened.

German government officials had repeatedly criticized the violent crackdown on the protests.

The clear stance of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) is a thorn in the side of Tehran.

High-ranking Iranian diplomats recently described Germany as a "regime" - and accused Berlin of interfering in the protests.

Many Iranian security officials and politicians have been hit with EU sanctions since the protests broke out.

The mass protests were triggered by the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in mid-September.

She died in police custody after being arrested for breaking Islamic dress codes.

According to human rights activists, at least 450 demonstrators were killed and around 18,000 demonstrators arrested.
