After surgery with a piano in the operating room, the Salesi maternal and child hospital in Ancona faces another cutting-edge technique to remove a malformation in the brain of an 8-year-old boy.

The operation, which lasted several hours, was the work of the surgeon Roberto Trignani, head of the Neurosurgery division of the Marche University Hospital, a department that also has pediatric responsibilities, with his team.

"During the procedure we used an 'electronic ear', practically headphones - Trignani tells ANSA - which transmits sound stimuli, in this case Mozart's music and Gregorian chants, and mechanical stimuli, with vibrations on the ear bone At the same time we recorded the effects on the electrical impulses that cross the brain. The use of the electronic ear - he adds - is a standardized method called the 'Tomatis method', used above all in the treatment of children with cognitive delay".

For the first time in the world, explains the neurosurgeon, this method will be combined with a surgical operation, thus guiding the team in real time and helping them

to "move better while removing the malformation".

The little patient was operated on under general anesthesia, but Trignani and his team are known above all for the use of 'awake surgery', with patients engaged in the most varied activities during the operations, including the preparation of stuffed olives .

In November two years ago at Salesi he had operated on a child on a musical background: on that occasion a piano had entered the operating room, played by Maestro Emiliano Toso.
