The Loisach-Isar Canal is to be denser, higher, stronger.

It will be completely renovated by summer 2023 - and emptied step by step.

Wolfratshausen – The renovation of the Loisach-Isar Canal has been underway since September.

According to a press release from Uniper Kraftwerke GmbH, which is responsible, “it is planned to improve the sealing of the canal, strengthen and raise dams in sections, create maintenance routes and renovate culvert structures”.

Uniper does not expect the work to be completed before next summer.

In preparation, we first mow the canal, then it is fished off.

To facilitate this, Uniper is gradually lowering the water level to a lower level from November 14th to November 25th.

The mowing work from the canal inlet in Beuerberg to below the Geltinger Bridge is necessary "so that the canal can be fished out more easily" and less organic material remains in the water channel while the canal is shut off, writes Theodoros Reumessel, press spokesman for hydropower for the company.

The cuttings are taken away by truck and disposed of properly.

Fishing clubs take over the fishing.

They would release the animals in neighboring stretches of river.

The Loisach-Isar Canal will remain dry until the summer

From Tuesday 29th November water will no longer flow through the canal - and this will remain so until the summer of next year.

"This canal shutdown is a necessary prerequisite for the safe and sustainable implementation of the work on the canal and its dams and structures," said spokesman Reumessel.

While the canal is being emptied, Reumessel reports, there will be a slightly higher discharge in the Loisach.

At the same time, the minimum amount of water in the Isar will be increased in order to ensure that there are enough discharges for ecology and other issues such as rafting.

"All adjustments to the water supply of the Loisach-Isar Canal and the Isar have been coordinated with the responsible authorities." peb
