A shock for the visitors of the Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt.

On Saturday, a man jumped to his death from the roof of the town hall - before the eyes of passers-by.

Augsburg – In Augsburg, a tragedy happened on Saturday afternoon right at the town hall and the adjoining Christkindlesmarkt.

A man climbed onto the town hall before the eyes of the surrounding passers-by and then jumped to his death.

The police and fire brigade could do nothing more for him.

Tragic incident at the Augsburg town hall

At around 12.15 p.m. the man began to climb up the facade of the Augsburg town hall.

This was noticed by numerous passers-by.

Because the Christkindlesmarkt was already open, there was a lot of activity on the town hall square.

The witnesses immediately called the police.

According to a spokesman, this arrived a short time later.

The fire department was also called to City Hall.

Since one had to assume a suicide attempt, specially trained officers were also called to the scene, the spokesman explains.

The fire brigade that was called in meanwhile set up a safety cushion below the town hall.

The Christkindlesmarkt, on the other hand, was not cleared because, according to the police, there was no danger to passers-by.

Police set up counseling center for eyewitnesses

When the man had climbed to the top of the town hall, he decided to jump without first speaking to the police.

It took almost half an hour from the ascent to the jump.

The spokesman assured that the safety cushion was set up correctly and in the right place.

However, the man consciously decided to miss it.

He died when he hit the ground.

The police immediately took care of the eyewitnesses to the incident.

"A counseling center was set up for passers-by," explains the spokesman.

Law enforcement, fire brigade and rescue workers are looked after by internal crisis managers.

Why the man chose this high-profile suicide remains unclear at first.

The identity of the dead man was not immediately clear.
