Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have identified the most common bacteria in severe oral infections, which are linked to common life-threatening diseases.

According to the Medical Express website, the researchers conducted the study using 1014 patient samples (469 women and 545 men), and determined the mass spectrometric method called (Maldi-Tove) with the speed of individual live bacteria in the samples, knowing that this method is rarely used in dental care, as well. They analyzed samples collected between 2010 and 2020 at Karolinska Hospital from records of patients with severe oral infections, and produced a list of the most common bacteria.

The researchers explained that the most common types of bacteria among the samples were (Tocoxus streptococcus), (Prevotella causative) and (Staphylococcus causative agent).

Professor (Margret Salberg Chen) from the Department of Dentistry at Karolinska Institute confirmed that we are reporting for the first time on the microbial composition of bacterial infections from samples collected over a period of ten years in Stockholm County, as the results show that many bacterial infections are associated with chronic systemic diseases and some of them increased during last decade.

Professor Salberg Chen explained that the study provides new insight into the diversity and spread of harmful microbes in oral infection, which helps to understand the role of dental infection in patients with underlying diseases, warning that infection with certain bacteria in the mouth will lead to significant damage to tissues elsewhere in the body. with the spread of infection.

The researchers recommended that dentists should collaborate more with clinical microbiology laboratories to gain a better understanding of the bacteria that cause dental infections to improve the diagnosis and management of oral infections.

It is noteworthy that previous studies had shown clear links between oral health and serious diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.
