Today, Russia and Kazakhstan announced their support for strengthening the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling, and Stockpiling of Biological Weapons and on Their Destruction.

The two sides said in a statement today on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them: “Russia and Kazakhstan note the importance of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Biological Weapons and on Their Destruction, as one of the foundations of the international security system.”

The statement added, “The two countries are taking actions and measures aimed at mutual support for initiatives aimed at institutionalizing the agreement, including through the conclusion of a legally binding protocol to the aforementioned agreement, which provides for an effective mechanism for verification, and organizing work in the initiative to establish an international biosafety agency.” .

Meanwhile, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, announced that Russia had not received a comprehensive response from the United States and Ukraine regarding Washington's biological and military activities on Ukrainian soil, under the Convention on the Elimination of Biological and Chemical Weapons.

"We have not received an adequate and meaningful response to the documents and evidence provided that shed light on the true nature of interaction between the Pentagon, its contractors and the Ukrainian side in the field of military and biological activities," Gatilov said, during a speech delivered today before the states parties to the Convention in Geneva. Russia was not considered and the United States rejected the proposal to conduct an international investigation under the auspices of the UN Security Council in accordance with Article VI of the agreement.

Gatilov noted that “as a result, and despite the fact that we have used all mechanisms available under the agreement to resolve disputes, the current unacceptable situation directly related to the implementation of the agreement remains unresolved, and we will pressure the American and Ukrainian parties to correct this,” explaining that “along with the majority Of the participating countries, Russia is convinced that the effectiveness of the agreement will increase significantly if a global, legally binding and impartial protocol is adopted relating to all articles of the agreement and provides for an investigation mechanism.
