The authorities in Ecuador arrested seven gunmen after they entered a hospital and took four hostages in the city of Chuna, in this country that suffers from violence related to the drug trade.
And Agence France-Presse quoted the local press as saying that the seven gunmen entered the hospital to assassinate a criminal who was admitted to the hospital for treatment in the coastal city of Chonh in the southwest of the country.
"The police operation resulted in the arrest of seven criminals, the liberation of four hostages, and the saving of lives at Napoleon Davila Hospital," President Guillermo Lasso wrote in a tweet.
The seven attackers were armed with rifles and machine guns, which they used to shoot at the police without injuring them, according to the police official, General Edwin Nogueira.
In recent years, Ecuador has seen a significant rise in violence by criminal gangs linked to drug trafficking.
