With the participation of a number of Arab and international researchers, the activities of the Second International Conference on Building Engineering were launched today, under the title “Towards More Sustainable Facilities”, in the amphitheater of Damascus University.

The themes of the three-day conference, organized by the Higher Institute for Seismic Research and Studies at the University of Damascus, include dialogue sessions from Damascus, and via video link from several Arab and foreign countries, discussing the importance of reinforced concrete structures from design and rehabilitation, seismology and design of facilities to resist earthquakes, and engineering management. Implementation technology, environmental, health and geotechnical engineering, techniques for using construction materials, disaster management and mitigation of damages.

The Dean of the Higher Institute for Seismic Research and Studies, Dr. Hala Hassan, stated in a speech during the opening of the conference that the convening of the conference is the best evidence of the start of recovery and the lifting of the scientific blockade, through the publication of Syrian research in the most important scientifically refereed journals, in addition to the participation of 88 researchers from 13 Arab and European countries. And Asian and African, in the arbitration of 120 articles and acceptance of 85 of them in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Britain, the United States, India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Iran.

Hassan indicated that the goal of the conference is to encourage Syrian researchers to present their high-level research work, which rises to the level of research carried out anywhere in the world, to bring together researchers and experts in the field of building engineering from international universities, and to present innovative research and advanced technologies.

In turn, the President of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban, pointed out the importance of the conference to learn about the latest developments in the field of building engineering and risk management for sustainable smart cities and modern technologies in this field, pointing out that it is an opportunity for international researchers and experts in building engineering to gather, and an opportunity to obtain modern scientific research, perhaps. It fulfills some of our needs.

For his part, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Bassam Ibrahim stressed the importance of the conference, as it is part of the stage of economic, urban, social, cultural and scientific recovery in Syria, pointing out that the educational process and scientific research did not stop during the years of the terrorist war on Syria, and it works in a competitive scientific environment that focuses on To improve and develop applied scientific research, plans, curricula and future time programs, while highlighting the most important scientific research.

The Governor of Damascus, Engineer Muhammad Tariq Kreishati, considered the conference an important step in the process of recovery and reconstruction, stressing that the concept of sustainable cities is at the forefront of the interest of the Governorate of Damascus as a promising response towards sustainability in all urban, environmental and social aspects.

In a statement to SANA reporter, Elham Ghorbal, a professor at the University of Serre-Pontoise in France, expressed her happiness at participating in this conference, and her presence in a country with an ancient Syrian history and civilization, stressing that her lecture will shed light on the impact of concrete buildings on carbon emission during the construction phase.

In a similar statement, Dr. George Wardeh, the Syrian expatriate in France, who is one of those in charge of organizing the conference and managing it scientifically, explained that about 88 scientific papers will be discussed over three days, which are of high importance to professors and students at Damascus University, stressing that what university students and professors present Syrian scientific research is no less important than international research.

Dr. Eng. Munir Al-Atrash, Head of the Structural Engineering Department at the Higher Institute for Seismic Research and Studies, confirmed that the organization and convening of this conference is a clear message that Syria is strong through the educational process and the scientific research provided, pointing out that the desired results and recommendations will contribute to finding and developing smart and effective solutions for use Optimization of available resources and energy, ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of construction and contributing to reconstruction.

And Dr. the engineer from the University of Tripoli, Hakim Abdel Qader, stated that he will focus in his lecture on concrete concrete, its materials and components, and the techniques used to reduce its weight while increasing the pressure, tension and temperature tolerance, expressing his happiness for his presence in the country of civilization, culture and love, Syria.

Dr. Ilham Bodour, a member of the scientific committee from the University of Aleppo, stressed the great importance of the participation of Syrian, Arab and foreign researchers, which is great evidence of the strength of the Syrian scientific influence and the great presence on the scientific world stage.
