An eruption at the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii - the largest active volcano in the world - began yesterday (Sunday) in the summit area, according to a report by the US Geological Survey.
The alert level was subsequently raised to "warning".
"At this time, the lava flow is still contained in the summit area and does not threaten the communities on the slopes," the warning said.
According to scientists, an eruption is not imminent, but due to a recent increase in earthquakes in the mountain peak area, they are on alert.
According to experts, the lava could reach homes within a few hours.
The volcano last erupted in 1984.

Hawaii civil authorities are currently holding meetings across the island to advise residents about possible outbreak and emergency preparedness.
The recommendation is to prepare a bag with food in advance and find places to stay if evacuation is necessary.
"There is no need to panic. But we need to be aware that we live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There is a potential for disaster," said Talmadge Magno, director of civil defense.
The volcano makes up 51% of Hawaii's land area, so in the event of an eruption, much of the island could be affected, he added.
