Freising

– A fundamental question that everyone should ask themselves: “Do you really need that now?” Manuela Gassner emphasized in her presentation “Zero waste/waste avoidance – simple, practical and realistic” with regard to waste avoidance in your own four walls won a lot.

The author's tip: Sometimes even small changes can have a big effect.

Only about ten curious people came to the meeting room of Freisinger Wohnbau GmbH on Plantagenweg to go on the garbage trip with Gaßner and to deal with the pressing questions of how each individual can fight the throwaway madness.

The afternoon was organized by the social counseling service of Freisinger Wohnungsbau and the Agenda21 group on energy and climate protection.

The figures: Around 554 kilos of municipal waste are generated across Germany every year, as well as 230 kilos of packaging waste per capita.

"Gift Edition" contains a mountain of junk

But why does the garbage heap keep growing?

Gassner clarified: Nowadays, many things have become short-lived and fast-moving.

The ready meal mentality has increased significantly, often due to the living conditions.

In addition, the market for care and cleaning products, all of which are packaged in plastic, has increased significantly.

A lot is also individually packaged, such as ketchup sachets or sweets.

Here Gassner showed a photo of a well-known sweet ball that left a table full of waste in the gift edition.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Other photographic examples that caused the guests to shake their heads: pre-cut fruit under cling film, muesli to go or a coconut without the shell but wrapped in plenty of plastic.

What is also added to all three case studies is a horrendous price and again the question "Do you really need that?" Gaßner: "We have arrived at high consumption."

Tip: Drink water from the tap

But what to do against this garbage madness?

To avoid plastic bags, fruits and vegetables should be placed in special nets or bags.

If necessary, a tea towel can also be sewn together.

Another tip: Buy bulk packs or in bulk shops, drink the water from the tap and bake your own sweets.

"Squeezing out" wherever possible, Gaßner emphasized using the example of a toothpaste tube, which can also be cut open to use the last bit: "That has nothing to do with stinginess, but simply with avoiding millers."

Some possibilities for improvement are so obvious that they are often overlooked: "If you buy the ice cream in a cone and not in a cup, then you have nothing to throw away".

A big effect can also be achieved with further small changes - for example by buying one-liter PET bottles instead of smaller versions.

Recycling is better than throwing away

Of course, the most sensible thing to do is to avoid plastic altogether.

Deodorants, for example, can be made in just a few simple steps, as can detergent with chestnut snippets and ivy.

Gassner's conclusion: "Recycling is better than throwing away - but it is best not to create anything for recycling at all."

Incidentally, when it comes to clothing, the author made short work of it and consistently cleaned out her closet.
