Dozens of people run, on Spanish soil, after crossing the fences that separate Melilla from Morocco on June 24.Javier Bernardo (AP)
On June 24, at the Melilla border post, the deadliest incident to occur on a European land border occurred.
An investigation by EL PAÍS, in partnership with Lighthouse Reports,
Le Monde, Der Spiegel
and
Enass,
an independent Moroccan media, brings new revelations about the event in which at least 23 people died.
After interviewing 35 survivors and recreating the border post in a 3D model, there are several findings: the jump was precipitated by attacks by the Moroccan police in the forests where the people were hiding;
for more than 20 minutes, the agents surrounded the post, firing tear gas inside it (despite the fact that international protocols advise against it);
a survivor and Moroccan agents recorded while they were dragging the victims point out that there was at least one death on Spanish soil, and the Civil Guard helicopter recorded the most critical moment of the crushing.
