Working despite your pension: This is reality for many people.

Also for a 63-year-old grandmother.

Prenzlau – The high prices for food and energy hit people with low incomes in particular.

Sometimes it's hardest for pensioners.

High inflation can make life difficult for seniors with low pensions.

For this reason, more and more people in old age decide to continue working despite reaching the standard retirement age.

Pension is not enough: 63-year-olds can only go into partial retirement

So does 63-year-old Carmen Gödke.

Actually, she could retire now, but she continues to work.

Because without the cleaning job, their net pension of 856.50 euros would not be enough, reports the

Nordkurier

.

Gödke pays 485 euros a month in rent, plus the ancillary costs – and these are likely to be significantly higher this year than in the past.

Thus, the grandmother of seven continues to work in the cleaning industry.

The hard job has now left its mark.

The knees are broken, the back and arms hurt - but it's no use.

Gödke goes into partial retirement.

"I couldn't have lasted longer than the many hours a week," she tells the online portal.

She is happy that her employer is giving her the chance to continue working a little longer, "because without this money, I would not be able to make ends meet."

Retirement: More and more people are working in old age

She is also grateful for the appreciation shown in her company.

"Even as an older colleague, you're still worth something," she makes clear.

Now she only cleans for one to two hours a day and only the lighter areas.

Vacuuming in particular is difficult for her - it's too much of a cross.

Carmen Gödke is just one of many retirees who want to, or even have to, continue to earn money despite their retirement.

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, the proportion of people of retirement age who are employed has doubled over the past ten years.

Still, for people who want to retire early but still want to do some work, there's good news now.

Because from the year 2023, they can earn unlimited amounts in addition to their pension.

So there is no threat of pension cuts as before.
