The Hochstadt district of Wessling has around 800 inhabitants, houses a restaurant, there are no shops - but there are five wood processing companies.

The latest additions are Markus Üblacker and Thomas Schneider.

Hochstadt – Markus Üblacker and Thomas Schneider met as trainees in Joseph Bernlochner Jr.’s carpentry shop in Hochstadt.

"It was a good time, but at some point we came up with the idea that I should start my own business and take Thomas with me," says Markus Üblacker.

The friends made the final decision in the beer garden of the Alter Wirt in Etterschlag.

“We always go there when there is something important to discuss,” says Schneider.

Said and done.

In August, Üblacker went into business for himself with his carpentry shop on Dorfstrasse – as the fifth wood-processing company in Hochstadt, which has just 800 inhabitants.

After completing his training, Markus Üblacker (30) attended master craftsman school and went in search of a suitable workshop.

He found what he was looking for on the premises of the haulage contractor Keller.

"It was a stroke of luck, the hall was exactly what I was looking for." For him, the step into self-employment was the continuation of a family tradition that was over a hundred years old.

In 1908, great-grandfather Hans founded the Üblacker carpentry shop on Münchner Straße in Gauting.

He was succeeded by his son August.

After his death in 1967, Helmut Übacker, Markus' father, took over the business at the age of 23.

He dissolved the company a good ten years ago, but took all the machines and tools with him to Baden-Württemberg, where he lives today, to be on the safe side.

"I think he secretly hoped that I would continue at some point," speculates the 30-year-old whose adopted home is Gilching.

But for the time being, continuing the tradition was not an issue.

"I started an apprenticeship as a carpenter when I was 15, but I didn't enjoy it at all.

That's why I switched to the computer industry.” The trip was short-lived.

“I realized very quickly that carpentry is in my blood and that I would definitely like to continue the family tradition.

Because I knew the Bernlochner company, I also did my apprenticeship there.”

He also has a very personal friendship with Thomas Schneider.

“We have the same interests, for example motorcycling and mountain hiking.

But sometimes we just go to the workshop at the weekend and tinker around with unusual projects.” It is ideal that Schneider not only trained as a carpenter, but also graduated as a carpenter.

"We are versatile and can respond to special requests, such as the construction of a desk." The workshop is fully equipped with the machines from the Gautingen period.

“My father had always valued high-quality machines.

Although they were a bit more expensive, they are still fully functional today.”

But what distinguishes the five wood-processing companies in Hochstadt – in addition to Üblacker and Bernlochner there are Seidel & Bayer, Authenried and Leutenbauer – is the close cooperation.

“If there is a need somewhere, we help each other or lend tools if they are missing somewhere.”
