The European Union on Tuesday "
strongly condemned
" the coup attempt in Sao Tome and Príncipe on November 24 and 25 and called in a statement on all political actors to maintain peace in the country.

We are confident that the authorities will shed light on the facts and hold those responsible to account, in compliance with human rights and the democratic values and standards shared by the EU and Sao Tomé and Príncipe
,” said said the spokesman for the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

The coup attempt was carried out ten days after the new government was sworn in and four people arrested in the aftermath died, according to army chief of staff Olinto Package.

The government of Sao Tome and Principe, a small island country in the Gulf of Guinea independent since 1975, condemned "a violent attempt to subvert the constitutional order".
