3,000 Christmas trees and colorful fairy lights: The Europa-Park in Rust will enchant its visitors with lavish Christmas decorations again this winter.

In order to save energy with the lighting, the operators have spent several million euros.

Rust - The Europa-Park in Rust is not only worth a visit in summer: During the Advent season, Germany's largest amusement park is transformed into a sea of Christmas lights every year.

Thousands of fir trees and Christmas baubles create a Christmas atmosphere, while the offers in the park are themed for winter.

According to plant manager Volker Klaiber, the fact that the operators were able to set up such lavish lighting despite the energy crisis is also due to new energy-saving measures, reports

BW24

.

"One measure, for example, is that we have now switched almost all of the park's lighting to LED operation, including the Christmas lights," says Klaiber in an interview with the

Badische Latest News

.

“As a result, we save more than 80 percent of the energy compared to before.

This re-lamping alone cost us several million euros.”

Europa-Park: Reduction in lighting that is hardly noticeable to visitors

As Klaiber further explains, the volume of Christmas lights in the park has been reduced to 60 percent compared to before the pandemic.

So there are a little fewer fairy lights than before.

“But the visitor doesn’t notice any of that.

The lighting has been thinned out a bit, but only where it was already a bit lush and in such a way that you don't really notice it." For example, while there used to be five illuminated Christmas trees on a corner, there may now only be three - which improves the visitor experience do not abort.

"It will sparkle and glitter with us this year as well."

The decoration in Europa-Park in numbers:

  • 3,000 fir trees

  • 10,000 Christmas tree balls

  • 1,500 decorative gifts and 1,500 ribbons

  • 2,500 Christmas roses and 1,000 Christmas stars

According to Klaiber, as a reaction to the energy crisis, Europa-Park is also making sure that the lighting is switched off again in good time.

"We now switch off large light installations such as those on the facades of the houses, on the tower or on the Ferris wheel at 10 p.m.." In the past, these would have been on for much longer, in the case of the tower even the whole night.

The park saves a further 30 percent in electricity due to the changed switch-on and switch-off times of the lights.

Europa-Park manager: "The visitors want Christmas and that's what they get from us"

Klaiber believes that criticism of the Christmas lights is inappropriate.

The share of Christmas lighting in the total energy consumption in the park is "vanishingly small" at less than one percent.

LED light chains would consume comparatively little electricity: “If I leave a light chain on for six hours a day for two months, it consumes about as much electricity as a modern efficiency class A oven in just two hours,” argues Klaiber to the

The owner of a Christmas house in the district of Ludwigsburg, who does not want to restrict himself despite the energy crisis, sees it similarly and lets his house shine with 100,000 lights.

Klaiber doesn't even think about letting complainers spoil the pre-Christmas period in the park.

“I want people to enjoy the lights.

For us, Christmas lights are a product that we sell to customers.

The visitors want Christmas and that’s what they get with us.”

Europa-Park has big plans for the future in terms of energy supply.

The park intends to invest 15 million euros in its own power supply over the next few years.

From 2024, the power consumption should be covered almost completely independently by a huge photovoltaic system, as Europa-Park boss Roland Mack recently told the

Handelsblatt

.

Where exactly the photovoltaic system is to be built is not yet known.

In the interview, the Europa-Park boss only revealed that the facility will be built on an area not far from the park and will cover more than 15 hectares.

As operations manager Volker Klaiber explains, Europa-Park already has its own hydroelectric power station and a photovoltaic system.

“With these alone, we produce thirty times the amount of electricity that we need for the Christmas lights.

And all of this completely CO₂-neutral.”
